Is there such a thing as a through the ice unit? No hole just put it on the ice and get readings??

I hope you're not talking about that thing on ebay that says it's better than a vexilar. It looks like a bullhorn. Anyway, most flashers will read through the ice as long as it's good clean ice. Not a lot of bubbles and such. That's what those handheld units are so good for. A Vex will do the same. Just make sure that there's a good fit to the ice with a little puddle of water to put the transducer in. It should read fine.

I know Marcum makes one that looks like a flashlight. I had gotten one last year for a friend, and it leaked. Turns out they were recalled because of that.
Anyway, that was the idea- clean off the snow, set unit on the ice and it gave you the depth reading. No fish finding properties at all, it is just a structure finding tool.
We ended up going in on a Vex...

Wise decision.  You can use that through the ice no problem.

I've had no problems with the vex as long as it's clear ice and you use water .
