Thill makes what they call an Ice-n-Fly. They come in three sizes, small med and large. The large is about the size of a wine cork or a little smaller. Give the large or med a try. I absolutely love them.

I was on a bus and just happened to be sitting on a news paper. This guy came up and asked. "Are you reading that ?"
I said  yes, stood up, turned the page and sat back down.

I use a piece of wine cork and cut it down so it rides just at water level.  Cut a small slit in the side of the cork and put the line in.  When you get one on and start reeling it in, the cork just slides off.

No matter the situation, I go with the smallest one possible, and one that hangs half way submerged. When it rolls and lays on its side (on an upward bite, like most crappie do) set the hook. Downward bites are a no brainer

We call them stick floats. If I use a float, thats what I use and find it best for crappies. I prefer just a super light rod tip. I usually have a couple rigged up for my boy though, he likes watchin' the float more then the rod tip.

I wish that I had more opportunity for crappie but when you live in trout country of CO/WY...  The ability to adjust bouyancy on the venom floats makes them best for my dead stick.  If the minnow pulls the float under, give it a little adjustment to increase its bouyancy.  I used to add and remove split shot from the line but this is much easier.  I can add split shot inside the float and also adjust the air bubble on the venom.
