Lake ice in Illinois?
« on: Jan 16, 2005, 11:45 AM »
What are the lakes doing as far as ice here in Illinois?  After the warm spell, I'm wondering how you guys are doing as far as getting back out and when?  The temps are looking pretty good for the next week so far.  Hope to get out soon here in the central part.  Gonna give it a couple days to thicking up.

Best of luck to all, and be safe.

Lonzo

Spud tested the Bloomington area lakes. 1!! inch of ice and tons of muddy water.  not a good thing if it ever makes safe ice your blades are going dull quick.  There was some sitting on ice but 1 inch ain't enough for me and the mud was unfishable I thought. ??? ??? ???

Fished Channel Lake at the chain yesterday. 7" to 8" of good solid ice. Should have taked the power auger instead of the hand.

Gills were at the base of the weeds. 4' to 5' of water.

This cold spell will really thicken the ice for our area lakes.

Good luck.

Blufloyd, which lakes did you test in Bloomington area?  I'm in the Champaign area, haven't been over to Leroy yet.  Hope to get out somewhere this weekend.

Good luck, Lonzo

Big thing is the unbelievable amounts of mud in water.  Never saw anything like it.  Ice isn't getting thick either we had 3+ inches rain a week ago.

Was out to Mautions saturday and on the 19acre lake there was 6-7 but i think it was the rain that froze on top that made it so thick.  Went sun to a private pond only about 1.5 acre and it had about 5 inches.  did have good luck there, three of us iced about 300 gills. it was a bit overpopulated by the owners standards.

the lake i fished had milky color to the water. We had 6 inches of ice but I did not think of all  the water drainage going into there before freeze up. It wasn't muddy but that is a good point you brought up              toph2o

In November of this year I will be moving to Il near Scott Air Forc Base. (E. Stlouis)  Will there be ice fishing in the area or how far will I need to drive to find safe ice?

Thanks
