Yesterday I was fishing a small 10-acre lake in the Black Hills of South Dakota. I have caught many small pike out of this lake, but nothing led me to believe that there was anything of this size in this tiny lake. I was fishing for panfish and had a couple tip ups out baited with my favorite pike bait (hot dogs). I decided to move one, drilled a new hole but saw that it was only 3 feet to the weeds beneath. Perhaps out of laziness, I decided to give it a try for a bit. Twenty minutes later the flag went up. I got there and it was spinning slowly. I grabbed the line and instantly knew I was holding on to the biggest pike that I have ever battled! She made insane strong runs, then got down into the weeds and stopped. I could do nothing but wait.... After several minutes I felt her trying to get out of the weeds and gave her enough slack to do so, then the fight was back on. Finally got her near the hole and saw her for the first time. I was weak in the knees and excited beyond belief! Got her head up the hole and was able to grab her and pull her out. It was 41 inches long and a girth of 24 inches! She was released quickly after a few pics. I caught the queen of the lake for sure! Goes to show, do not overlook tiny lakes, they can hold some big fish!

After almost 50 years of fishing, I have not had many chances lately to say that I caught my biggest fish ever! I know that others have caught bigger, but I am still floating on the high from this catch and wanted to share the experience.

Nice fish some may have caught bigger but there is something to say for those monsters that surprise you coming out of a small pond, especially if its a pond you fish a lot on. If I were you id still have quite the high from a situation like that congrats sir!
