Title: Late season fishing
Post by: Brian VT on Mar 18, 2022, 06:43 PM
Gotta love New England. Fishing in 68 degrees temperature through 16" of ice after work today.  @)

I'm new to Maine.
In VT I only fished with traps and mostly caught pike and a few bass or hornpout.
2 winters in Maine so far (Upper Range).
Last year I got skunked. This year I caught 1 brookie (and lost 1 at the hole). Still mostly fishing with traps.
I finally caught my 1st fish ever on a jigging rod this afternoon (I'm 55 yrs old) . A 14" salmon on a chartreuse Road Runner (that I got from site sponsor MONSTERBASS).
It was a roller! The line was wrapped around it 4 times and it came up the hole tail first.

I'll be sad to see the ice go. I hope you all get a few more good days in before then.

Congrats on that 1st jigging trout!  Still no shortage of ice as of this week.  The rain, wind, and fog coming in this weekend may chew it up quite a bit.

I just looked at Upper Range fish species to see what type of salmon it might have been.
No salmon listed.
I was a very dark colored fish with some dark maroon also. And the top jaw hooked down over the bottom jaw.
Looked like salmon to me.  ???

You never know a salmon might of got mixed in while stocking. Some of the Browns look similar .

More than likely a brown there.

Salmon are raised  in a different hatchery. Casco I think. Brookies Dry Mills, browns New Gloucester.  So might not get mixed in, Prob a brown as they said.
But come to think Rainbows are raised in Casco ? So  maybe could be mixed ?

Do you have a pic of your fish?  Be interesting to see it!

Salmon move around a lot and can show up in places you wouldn't expect ;D  I don't know if any salmon are stocked in connecting waterways in that area.

Def could be a salmon but more than likely a brown.

I didn't get a pic because I was unsure of the laws and didn't want to keep it out of the water any longer than I already had.
I guess it could have been a brown but it was almost black with a maroon belly and gill plates.
Another odd thing was that it had some ugly growths or something near it's head.
Was still nice to catch something. Was a very slow year.

I fished Indian pond yesterday and today in Moxie Township.  Still had 22" of ice.
The wind was howling on Saturday but this morning was warm and no wind.  Great way to end the season.

Slow days there.  Decent amount of fish spotted on the flashers but they just weren't biting. Coupla salmon, one short. A smallmouth. And a big 'ol Chub.
