Title: Gas augers
Post by: RuttNutt on Feb 17, 2022, 07:24 AM
I was at Upper Woods on Saturday and could not believe the number of guys still using gas augers!  :o

I counted no less than 5 guys using the old dinosaurs! First time in the last 10 years that us electric auger guys were outnumbered.

I was just shocked to see so many going “old school!”

Some folks are more focused on catching the fish than what latest gear is used to drill the hole.  ::)

Personally I love the screaming of my gas powered 2 stroke and everyone else's on some hard water. Nothing beats the smell either.

I miss the ole one armed bandit, the exhaust echoing through the trees and valleys. I'm waiting to see beefed up diesel augers, just clouds of black smoke marking freshly drilled holes.

I wanna have a nitro methane auger with an expansion chamber on it...like my mid 70's Yamaha dirt bikes.  ;D

If it ain't broke why fix it. Wait until everything is electric and you are only allowed to charge during specific days and times. I'll still be drilling while your waiting.

If things ever get to that point, I'd imagine gas augers would be illegal to use by then, anyway. 🤷‍♂️

Gas outboards are already illegal more and more places, so I can imagine that scenario, eventually.

I bought a Strikemaster 4 stroke ,Honda engine about 12 yeaars ago. Electric augers were just something new into the market. I wish I had bought an electric one then. But my Honda does the job just fine. I only take my gas one if the ice 8" or more. Cutting by hand is good exercise  :flex:

I get my workout at the gym!  ;D

Plus my Milwaukee Fuel is 6 years old now and still on the original batteries. And I use it a lot in the off season around the house. One of the best investments I ever made!  @)

Well, we’ll see.................bu t I am betting with these new brushless cordless drills they will last as long as a gas auger.

Amish folks are saying when your electricity grid collapses and your truck fails I will still have my lantern and horse.  I think they may have something there.  Sound logic.  We should all do that, right?  We should all just toss all of this modern living and technology in the trash and get back to the good ole days.  Makes perfectly good sense to me.  We should get rid of our new trucks and all go find some from the 50's.  Back when a truck was a truck and men drove them.  You could fix them with a wrench and your own two hands.  None of this fancy power breaks or power steering junk that is for wimps.  I think I'm on to something here.  I'm going home tonight and taking the furnace out of my house and putting in a wood burner just incase electricity become nonexistent in three years.

Sometimes it is just funny. Before someone gets all fired-up.  It was all in good fun.  You do you.

I was out a few weeks ago fishing deep creek.  You could hear that gas augers running.  I stopped and said that sound sure brings back the memories, I can smell the exhaust now, and thoughts of ripping on the string for 5 minutes and swearing at that thing.  I've burnt gloves and clothes on them.  Lugged those heavy pieces of meatal all over many lakes.  The good ole days.  I sold a gas auger for propane auger and a propane auger for an electric auger many years ago.  For me personally there are way to many benefits to electric than a fuel based auger under the condition that I fish.

I get the point of the thread.  That sound is reminiscent of ice fishing.

Our power went out for a week back in that March storm 3? Years ago. Got a nice big 6500 watt generator that will keep us comfortable until the power comes back on.

I guess along with his generator he'll be sitting in the dark.

But his blackout won't begin for at least 3 or 4 days after yours.  Without a generator you'll have been sittin in the dark since less than half a second after the grid went down.

Better make sure your kerosene powered computer and TV up and runnin before the next outage...

Nope- but I remember the odd/even days at the gas station when my parents were filling up their car. You could still get gas...............just every other day.  ;). Kinda like what happened during Hurricane Sandy..............you might not be able to get it where you were used to, but you could get it somewhere if you needed it.

I get grief from my buddies over my 31 year old Jiffy 30 that weighs 39 pounds. I tell them they’re soft and to use the “lady’s room” tree on the shore to pee.
But 2 pulls at the start of the season and she roars still with the original original carb. I could never part with her.
Besides, I like making her scream as the yuppies cross country ski by me; I can see the look of pure disgust.

I have the same set up capt., and couldn’t be happier with it…especially on 12”+ ice! I use Tru-Fuel 4/stroke, and she runs like a top. Weight is manageable as well for an O.G. like me!
Also have 6” Nils…use by hand on early ice, and with a Milwaukee Fuel conversion later on until the ice gets thicker! Love to hear that familiar “growl” of the 4-banger.  :flex:

If you havn't owned an electric you would change your mind. I retired my gas augar 9 years ago and bought a ION in 2013. I have drilled many holes with it lately in 16 inches ice with no problem. It has the same battery that came with it and replaced the blades just once.It starts as soon as you push the buttoncuts thru in seconds no gas or oil mix needed no fumes,no spark plug oe replacment cord. This discussion is like the Ford,Chevy,Dodge argument its matter of personal opinion But if you ever do use one you will see how efficent they really are.

No argument here between either camp. I use Fuel/Octane rigs for most of the season but I love getting my Tanaka out once or twice every year.  A fresh edge on the Nils from Frank and running about 80:1 with the Amsoil.  That baby just crushes 8" holes!  I'm 59 and grew up with One Arm Bandits and Jiffy 30's for years.  They were heavy but are also are near and dear to my heart.  I have a lot of memories from 45-50 years ago and most of em started with a Jiffy banging out holes to hang Beaver Dams for Pike. I'll always have a gas rig and will leave it to somebody who appreciates it when I check out.

We used the ION gen2 yesterday for the first time, that thing is a beast, so we now have a Jiffy 30 for sale. That thing went through 11" of ice like nothing. We have the Jiffy for 21 years and it has treated us well but let's be honest it is a pain in the butt. Our only regret is that we should have made the switch sooner. We still get to piss of the yuppies by blasting our music on the ice!

WELL I JUST BOUGHT THE STRIKE MASTER 40, AND I LIKE IT BUT IT WONT REPLACE MY 4 STROKE STRIKE MASTER POWER AUGER. I WAS UP THE MOUNTAINS ABOUT 6 TIMES AND THE ICE WAS REALLY THICK THIS YEAR MEASURED AT 15 INCHES, AND WITH THE ELECTRIC AUGER I WOULD DRILL ABOUT 50 HOLES BEFORE IT LOST POWER. BUT WHEN I TOOK THE BATTERY OFF AND PUT IT IN THE WARM BAG IT WOULD CHARGE UP A NOUGH AND I WAS ABLE TO DRILL ABOUT 40 MORE HOLES IF NEEDED. SO ITS GOOD ENOUGH FOR AROUND HERE BUT IF I WAS GOING ON A TRIP I WOULD BRING MY 4 STROKE.

Ah Hell! I’m turning a 40 year old 8” mora by hand. I guess I’m saving the planet  but it’s killing me. I have gas (Old Jiffy) that works great but it’s heavy and most years ice isn’t so thick.

I’m with you Drillin - I’ve got an old Jiffy that I’ve been using for 25 years and it still fires easy and does the job.  When I bought my home in 1991, the previous owner left some ice fishing equipment which included an 8” Arjon / Snabb.  It has been sitting unused, but since I retired I thought I would give it a try.  It actually works very well.  You get a mild workout but it cuts a nice hole.  I’ve read that keeping them sharp is critical and the one I used still had the price sticker on it although it was somewhat faded.  I think it was $22.95.  I’ll be using it again next year!

Post by: IceSpartan on Feb 22, 2022, 04:30 PM
The biggest difference I’ve noticed between my Ion and an old Jiffy is the fishing.  If you can hear that gas auger halfway across the lake, so can the fish.  Especially with a species like Trout.  I’ve noticed that the bite is on much faster after drilling with a quiet electric than any gas machine.  I don’t miss scaring them away.

Hey Spartan, I haven't noticed that. I have caught fish after drilling a fresh hole. Normally we always fish with tipups though if that matters. I have to say that Gen 2 is a nice auger.

My Gramps always said to approach a trout stream quietly and light footed.  I thought he was crazy when I was a kid.  But I’ve learned over the years fish spook easily, including the use of things like motorboats and loud augers.  Anything you can do to reduce noise and vibration improves fishing in my opinion.

Majority of sound being transferred into the water is going to be from the blades regardless of how they are being driven

I would disagree.  Have you ever heard your neighbors’ snowblower running while all of your windows and doors are closed?  A lot of times I’m ice fishing in 10 feet of water.  Do you think the fish can’t hear a motor through 6 inches of ice?

I dont believe it scares fish.we used spud bars to cut holes back in the day.noise from cutting ice with a auger, doesnt matter be it spud, hand crank, gas or electric .to each there own.

It’s a personal choice for sure.  If you are catching fish than keep what your doing.  But I do believe noise and vibration scares fish.  The next time you’re on a dock at a lake and you see some fish underneath, jump up and down on the dock a few times and see what happens.

Depth comes into play.15ft and over is not like a shallow dock.anyways just stating i mark fish immediately after cutting holes with any auger.

I'm not under water in my house. The noise of blades being driven through ice will transfer pretty well to the water, noise above not so much. Fish in a fish tank are a great example imo kid can sit and yell at the tank all they want fish don't flinch but they tap the glass and the fish lose it. Luckily most fish don't seem to care much about drilling holes as loud as it may be for them down there

If you have ever been underwater in a swimming pool you can definitely hear people yelling.  And a loud motor is quite audible.  My original point was that the gas auger will scare more fish away than the electric, yielding more potential fish soon after drilling.  After some time they will come back and it won’t make much difference.

Water is a poor conductor of sound. It's a great conductor of vibration.

Point is the engine is nothing when compared to the blades. You can't cut a hole without driving blades through the ice.

Sorry, but the blades are nothing compared to the engine.  My blades are very quiet.  Noise scares animals of all types.   If you want proof I’ll come to your deer blind with a siren and see how well you do.  LOL.

It's all about how the sound/vibrations transfer. If you put your siren in a bucket of water you're welcome to sit in the tree with me

What about the vibration of the engine transferred to the ice by the shaft/auger? 🤔

You fellers need to spend a day on a Virginia class sub and learn all about stealth and noise underwater.  ;D

When starting the auger I could see that being possible so I'll give you that one. When drilling it'd have to be louder than the blade. Folks seem to underestimate that noise/vibration. We'll need a government funded study to find out. Then another to see if the fish even care ;D

I actually watched a video on this before and it isnt the motor noise thats heard underwater... Ill look for the video for the skeptics... But ive also seen walleye spook from my cleat scraping the ice in about 12fow.... So depending on depth ANY noise CAN spook a fish.... Some fish more than others

A lot of good debate here on noise.  I think I’ll stick to my strategy.  Whenever I approach a trout stream I am quiet and stealthy.  Same thing in my kayak on a lake, I try to paddle lightly and avoid banging on the gunwale.  And on the hardwater I prefer my quiet electric auger and lightly treading around the ice in my cleats.  I’ve had some good results.

I really doubt that noise from augars has much effect on fish in a lake, now trout in a stream maybe.Have you ever seen the pics from  the fishing contests up in minesota (sp) there are literlly hundreds if not thousands of fisherman drilling holes in the ice. They still catch fish.Hre at pymatuning on a nice ice fishing winter day many many augars drilling and we still catch fish.

Again, the point wasn’t that you won’t catch fish using a gas auger.  The point was that I have found I do better immediately after drilling with an electric than with a loud gas auger.  They don’t get spooked as much.  In any situation when you scare the fish away, eventually they come back.

I’m starting to wish I had never mentioned it.  Should have kept it my secret. ;D   In other news, I do much better fishing on a dock when there isn’t ten kids swimming and doing belly flops off the end of the dock.   :roflmao:

I don't think fish "remember" like human beings.

If they did, how do you explain missing a fish and then catching it on the next cast?

I think that noise from the blades contributes the majority of sound transmitted to the water.  Sound travels better in ice than in water and better in water than air.  Blades are in direct contact with the two best sound transmission paths.  They'd contribute the most noise.

But I don't think it matters.  Once noise and vibration stop I don't believe fish are thinking, "I better not go over there, even if there's food, because it was noisy and shakey over there 5 minutes ago."  Fish are tuned to realtime threats.

I'm going to stop fishing for trout in waterfall areas because obviously it's too loud for them there.

I guess I've caught deaf brook trout all these years.

Just for ease of use, I’ll never go back to a gas auger. Glad when I was able to afford an electric one. I actually sold my gas auger and went back to a hand model to cut down on smell and weight. Glad I did.

I drill 10 inch holes and alot of them on big water, friend had an ION G2 6 inch, maxed out at 27 holes , 12 inches of ice. My old jiffy is unlimited!

As i stated earlier post on this it's a personal choice,I don't drill 27 holes in 12 inches of ice so my almost 10 year old ION works just fine for me its lighter than my old strikemaster lazor mag and after using the ION would never go back to gas.I still have the same 40 volt battery, blades replaced only once, havn'y never not started on first squeeze, have not bought a drop of gas,no 2 stroke oil,no stink anf umes in my hub or shed,no cord to snap on me either. Nuff said made my choice long time ago.

Amen. How many holes do you need?  LOL.  My Ion always drills plenty, and faster than a gas auger by far.  It doesn’t  leak fuel mix in my Jeep, doesn’t blast my ears when cutting holes, and starts every time without pulling on a rope 15 times.  There two types of people on the ice: those with electric, and those who will eventually be buying electric.  ;D

I don't know about the other Gen 2s but our 10" just blew through 11" last weekend and 8" today. We still had 2 bars left and drilled over 25 holes. The Jiffy was working well but it was time to upgrade, and we now have a Jiffy 30 for sale.

6 guys at Erie we average  125+ holes a trip. Lot less weight with the electric, but maybe they will keep improving the amp hour capacity on the battery. Just cant go there yet

Where and how you fish does have something to do with what kind of auger set-up you need.  I paired a Milwaukee Fuel drill with a Clam plate and my 8" Strikemaster Lazer this year and have been amazed at the results.  Read many posts how an 8-inch auger won't work well with a Clam plate set-up, but it's been great for me.  Then again, I'm fishing in Southwest PA where a foot of ice is a lot anymore and even when I'm moving a lot seldom drill more than 30 holes.  I did drill close to 50 one day in nine inches just to work it out and still had juice in my 5 amp battery with another tucked away in my sled in reserve.  I doubt that I'll ever use the second battery.  I wouldn't want to blow in all the holes for a big group running tip-ups in thick ice though; might not be so good for the drill.  When I do drill a good many holes, they're spaced out over the course of a day.

Drilled about 30 holes in 25" of ice last weekend with my Strikemaster/Honda 4 stroke. Might have used a cup and a half of gas. Started with two short pulls the first time and one pull the rest of the day. Drilled all over a lake until we struck perch.
