how do you catch burbot in the summer?
« on: Aug 08, 2003, 05:08 PM »
I live on a lake in sw AK, the deepest parts are around 350 feet.  Does anyone catch burbot in that deep of water or should I check the creeks & points with drop offs?  Any advice would help, thanks in advance.

Alaskan Man,
I have had some success this year with drop offs right around dusk to dark.  Seems the fish will migrate up the shelf to find bait in the shallows and thats when you can drift across them at a slow rate, (wind permitting.)  I had caught a couple in a 120 ft. local Interior lake on a deep shelf in about 60-80 ft. using a black maribou jig and cut bait.  Good luck!

Barleydog, Lake Aleknagik.  I've tried several places but the lake is pretty big and my night fishing time is limited.  I was advised to try later in the fall, I think I will because I haven't caught one yet.

Alaskaman,
Lots of snails!  Big ones too!  Other than that, a few blackfish, sculpin, and sisco.  On the Chena this summer, I caught a couple with Sea Lampreys in thier guts!  Funny that's what I had caught them on.  Seems that they really like the little "eels" and go crazy turning over rocks or other river debris to get at them.  What did you find down there?  Do you use sets in the winter? or jig for them? -Barleydog :'(

I tried jigging this summer with a couple different spoons with small chunks of whitefish and a couple set lines with bait.  The set lines with salmon eggs didn't last at all, small fish would eat the eggs too quickly, so I switched to whitefish.  I think I'll try a couple more times with the set line in 100 feet of water or so then if I don't catch I'll wait till winter to jig for them.  There has been a couple people that I know of that have caught some around 36 inches in length in the winter.

Hey Barley Dog, I talked with a friend who lives on the Kuskokwim River last week.  He said they catch hundreds of burbot in the fall with cut smelt for bait, mainly for subsistance use.  He had gotten 23 in less than half an hour all around 24" in length the night before I called!  Pretty amazing fishing!  Do they get that plentiful on the Yukon?

Alaskaman,
Way to go!  I haven't gotten a chance to cruise up to the Yukon yet.  Hunting season put a stop to the fishing season, but I am now ready to go since the moose is in the freezer.  I gotta tell you that I don't know of alot of folks who fish the Yukon for Burbot, but I know they are there!  Barleydog

I feel like I need to get a boat so I can catch fish at deeper depths. I have never caught a burbot near shore before.

My neighbour out at the cabin gets them in his net when netting for lakers.
He doesn't eat them so he brings them to me to dispose of.

Netting for Lakers huh?  I've had most of my success sight fishing for burbot in 2-10ft with a 1-2oz jig in the summer and fall.  So easy and can be pretty fun when you spot em and watch them suck it up.
