personal preference.  I have used them before. When I did I would tie the spoon/jig to the line and 3 feet up put the swivel in.

I don't like my line all tangled so I always use swivels, barrel swivels I find work best.

I prefer to use a snap swivel, quick and easy change of lures and less line twist than without. ;)

I use light braid for my main line, inline swivel, then 3' of floro.

NEVER EVER do I use a snap swivel.  The last thing I want to do is to possibly make the fish shy, especially when they are lethargic.  If you have ever watched big fish on a camera or sight fishing you will see many many of the big girls watch and look it over pretty good.  Anything wrong and they won't take.  I am a firm believer in using a high quality barrel swivel on my main line and then run minimum 20" of floro 10-8lb - right down to 4lb on some occasions (2lb on perch).   If you catch a pike it's 50/50 if you will lose your hook, but it's worth doing to see those big eyes landed.   This way you can rip rip rip and have no tangle, as well as your hook won't spin once you stop moving it.  The additional bonus is that the hook won't flip up and catch the snap swivel, which likes to happen at the worst time.   As for changing hooks- my version is taking lots of rods!  Always keeping one up on the fish!

Most of my ice rods have a small snap swivel tied on. I dont find it makes much difference to the fish and
changing lures is a snap ;D
I do have a couple rods with small micro jigs  (Wolfram & rat finky) tied direct for when the perch are finnicky.
Even then the hali spoon with a perch eye on the snap swivel takes more fish.
Use whatever method works best for you. The important thing is to have confidence in what you are doing.

first get the crankbait snaps then the barrel swivel (watch the size and the strength, the more money spent on the barrel swivel the better - Pokeys selection is fantastic) then put the together and they usually last a whole season. also use them in summer for spoons casting from shore way better action

Sampo swivels are great ones too.  You do get what you pay for.

Sampo Ball bearing swivel, black and small. The barrel swivels (even Sampo) just don't spin as well... If you are going to use one, you might as well use the one that will do the job the best...

I always use a snap swivel for walleye, and a fastsnap for perch. I put together my own snap swivels using a mustad diamond swivel and cross lock.
