Post by: Deggert60 on Jan 25, 2013, 07:50 PM
For some reason I couldn't find if there was a prize for the winner of the Brag N' Tourney? The rules made it seem like the winner got something, or is it just bragging rights? Thanks

You do NOT need to be sign'd up for the IS tourney to be in the NEW YORK only brag'n rights tourney.
All you need to be eligible in this tourney is: live in NY and have your location filled out in your profile and use the IS tourney card.
This is because there are some that don't get into the Ice Shanty tourney, but there are lots of NY icefishermen that like to show off their catches.  @)

So the badges will be PMed  out at the end of the whole thing in March right, if so why the new leader board for febuary.
It show the kinds and sizes of fish for each month. Plus it allows more people at a chance to get up on the leaderboards.

The overall is the ultimate winner for the badge but it's nice to see from month to month the size and caliber of fish come in from month to month...Plus, if we have a warm year, then lake trout don't even start showing up till Feb. It's all about giving a chance, and everyone doesn't get to get out all the time on the ice either.

Fish On!

Let's see some more fish ladies and gents...   :icefish:

I'm guilty, but won't be next year.
Combsey and I have big enough mouths to be able to rally some dudes around here.
I would have trumped that 1st place trout.  ;) Baitbox, Bigred, and jager would have put us all to shame.
Had Bird participated, he'd have taken 1st and 2nd in the perch. It means nothing now, but watch out next year guys.  @)

I know the above guys would have taken the top of said categories but if you don't show it off, it's not true brag'n rights, lol.
I also know that a lot of guys didn't post cause they want to release the fish unharmed and frozen up, too. I can understand that too, heck I stopped ice fishing this year way back when the ice hit about 12-14 inches and the real long deep freeze and deep snow. That is why you guys need to get your catches in early, I think that some of the best fish are caught at 1st ice.  @)  ;D

Fish On!

And hope to see more next year!!

Your right it means nothing now, so why even post a comment like that? Leave it up to shanty mods to put down guys in a contest that they didn't even enter a fish in. Have some class man. Unreal.

That wasn't my intention at all man. I'm hoping to "call out" the guys I mentioned to help light this thing up next year. That's it.
I'm sorry you saw it as me putting down anyone. That's not how I roll.
I apologize if anyone else was offended.

Nope, maybe a replica some day, but this 3 pound crappie went to a buddy along with a 2.5 pounder too, we let a 14" and 15" crappie go that day, kept the 16+" and 17+"ers.

The ones in the fish entry only? They are moved to the congrats topic or question topic in this section.
Read the rules, ONLY PICTURES OF FISH IN THE ENTRY topics.

The posts are moved to the correct place in this area, I'm not deleting them, just cleaning house and putting things were they go to keep them clean.

36"? 8.5-10 pounds?
The one I didn't enter was 38" even. It was over 10lbs. I don't weigh my fish. I did measure the girth but can't remember what it was. The fish I entered was heavier than the 38. They came from two different bodies of water. The water the entered fish came from just produces pigs.

I just wanted to say thank you fish n adventures for measuring my pickeral accurately.  This fish will not be on the main IS tourney leader board because that moderator is measuring  over and inch shorter because the mouth is open on the fish.  I guess if the mouth is open he measures from the top lip.   Why I don't know?  The top lip is always shorter than the bottom lip whether the mouth is open or not.  The fish in question in clearly over 25".  I'll be taking more measurement pictures in the future.

The best thing you can do is get a pic straight down at the fish and tape. Not from a slight angle. Nice pickerel btw!

5) The fish entry is judged by length only - rounded DOWN to the closest 1/8 inch.
***THE NY BRAG"N RIGHTS MEASUREMENT IS OF THE WHOLE FISH AND DOESN"T FOLLOW THE NORMAL ICE SHANTY TOURNEMENT MEASUREMENT SYSTEM!!!***  STOP EMAILING LONEWOLF BECAUSE OF A MEASUREMENT HE IS GIVING YOU, READ HIS RULES, THERE IS VERY SPECIFIC PARAMETERS TO KEEP IT AS FAIR AS POSSIBLE FOR ALL. ***

LOOK HERE FELLOW NEW YORK MEMBERS
*** STOP EMAILING LONEWOLF about your measurements given, the only one to blame is yourself for not reading the rules and following the rules on the measurements!!!   I too am subjected to the Ice Shanty rules when posting fish. Do you know how many times and fish that I've entered over the years and lost size and had my entries DQ'd. Many, more than 5 of my fish have been DQ'd over the years, do you see me whining and complaining to Lonewolf for keeping EVERYONE to the same rules!!!!

Just because I measure our fish from the tip of the mouth to the longest tip of the tail, doesn't mean that the normal Ice Shanty tournament does it the same, READ THE RULES, and if you have a problem and post up these problems, you are subjecting your entry to DQ.

Come on guys, these tournaments are FREE and we all should just have fun and not pick things apart. You guys have NO IDEA how much time and work these things are.

AND, if there is lots of emails and whining to lonewolf or anyone else running the normal Ice Shanty tournament about the different sizes, our NY BRAG'n only, then our little NY tournament won't be running any more. It's a lot of extra work to do these extras for our members.

STOP WHINING about your measurements, it is what it is, all entries are looked at equally per the rules!!!

The Ice Shanty tournament has very specific rules and our NY Brag'n tournament has very relaxed measuring.

It was my fault totally and I apologized to lone wolf.   It is clearly stated in the main IS rules about the open mouths I just never read that far into it.   I guess its time to upgrade and put team NY up top

That is more like it. It's hard to get those big ones and make sure you do all that you can do to keep the mouth closed and return the fish back to the water. But, it can be done and it make you more and more want to get a bigger one.  ;)  Thanks for apologizing, I know it's hard, and I know it's hard to see your awesome catches shortened by 1/8" to 1", but it's the only fair way to do it. If you look at the entries with all the open mouths and if that was allowed, it could add up to 1" to a fish, so do all that you can to close those mouths.  ;D

Thank you Wayne for clearing it up. Also nobody wants the NY tourney to end.

The reason for the shortest point measurement :
When I started this tournament a long time ago I received many complaints regarding open jaw vs closed jaw measurements. I was originally measuring from the furthest point.
That spring I and several others conducted a test over a few weeks. We caught lm bass, sm bass, crappies, perch, etc.. Using the same fish we took pictures to the IS tourney standards with open jaw and closed.
The results weren't what I expected. The open jaw yielded anywhere from 1/4" plus and in some cases over an inch in length.
I added the new rules the following season to keep the playing field level.
By the way these rules are not new .. I wrote them and they have been in affect for probably 10 years now.

I'm not able to see social media at work where I have the software that I use to check measurement.
I've pulled your fish off and will check it out tonight later when I get to work.

Well, thanks and a big thanks to all that entered a fish or tow or three.

Now, it seems as if there wan't that many guys this year???  Is we get some more guys in for next year maybe we'll continue, but as of now, it seems that not very many NY ice fishermen are into the Bragg'n tourney??

Think it was the size of the fish entered in the early stages, the walleye and crappie were pretty much unbeatable from the get go, perch was up there also.. And those are really some of the most sought after fish.. As fishny said. Next year will be different.. I've talked to a lot of people out on the ice etc etc, that didn't really know about it...

I totally get that right there. It was down right cold through out Feb. and lets talk about the snow, geezzz.
Congrats on C&R'ing, I too C&R about 99.9% of the time. That is why it's nice to have a shanty near by to get into while getting photos ready.  ;D
That and yes, there were some real nice fish posted up right at the begining  ;) , but we still like to see some of y'alls catches.

Now how about changing things up a little bit for next year and chance up some of the catagories ?
Or just stay with the popular 7 that we have ?

I would think theres enough, Raquette,Forked, Blue MT lakes are all open year round and hold Brookies and those lakes are all practically next door to each other.. Id imagine theres more if you look for them..

Granted not like there is tons of guys pursuing them, but im sure it would bring out some would be otherwise lurkers

This looks good but I would make Pike and Muskies including tiger a separate category and do a trout category instead of browns/rainbows and a separate for brookies. There just are not that many people who target brookies through the ice imo

You could just have a trout category, but would need to leave brookies out of it IMO.
As far as pike/ muskies, why have a separate category for the two? Pike and tigers grow very similar in length. If it was a contest determined by weight, no they would not be able to compete with each other.

Because someone down the line will catch a big tiger and it will get beat by a pike and they will complain that tiger muskies and pike shouldn't be in the same category because they are different types of fish.... The IceShanty tourney used to have muskie and tigers in the same category since they are both muskies and a separate category for pike but have since got rid of the category for muskies since there were little to no entries year in and year out. Also in NY the lakes that do have tigers in them are no where near how big pike can get in the NY waters. Also, tigers are a lot harder to catch than pike of the same size but about the same as a muskie

Idk where you fish for tigers but in the NYS waters I fish, they most certainly do get just as big as NYS pike. And I know very well the hours devoted to catching them.
After all, this is just for bragging rights. Who cares, just fish it. If a species I devote most of my time towards isnt part of it, why participate. We are looking for more participants aren't we?

It would be no different than someone catching a bigger pike! You said it yourself, how often would someone actually enter one? There are 50" pike in NYS, and there are 50" tigers in NYS. Is it because you have no tiger waters near you that you don't like this? You also said that pike get much bigger in NYS than tigers, so what is there to worry about? :)

all valid points.
Just like combining the trout, I personally don't think it's a good idea to do so, it makes for added complaining.
It's hard to make people happy if you combine any of the species together, there is arguements from all angles.

Can you take a vote? The chances of catching a 40"+ tiger is far less than a pike. And, as we can all see, not a pike over 40" was entered this season. So why not try to open up the door a little bit to get more people participating? The only people who will have a problem will be those who don't have tiger water near by or can't take the 100's of hours involved targeting them. If there was a tiger only category, I can count on one hand of how many people are out there pursuing them in NY.

Let me get crazy here.. And please forgive me if this just seem out of the realm of possibility.. But why not just have a voting poll.. Run it for a month before the tourney that way everyone has enough time to vote...

Walleye,Perch, Pike, Pickerel,Crappie, Lakers,Bluegills are automatically in.. Unless we have an overwhelming objection...

Species voted for:
Tiger Muskie
Brookies
Rainbows
Browns
LLSalmon
Splake
Burbot
White perch/bass whatever they are called
RockBass
LGM Bass
SmM Bass

Top 5 in votes gets a NY bragin tourney category spot

I have a muskie water near me and I could care less about them (although i do target them after the morning walleye bite) however i mainly target panfish for the freezer... and i love catching 14" perch all day.... just speaking for some people who don't check the thread anymore....

I just think pike should be one separate category and muskie including tigers should be a different category like the ice shanty tourny had

A possibility, but the problem with a few of these other species are they look very similar and hard to tell them apart at times.
Splake - brookies
Rainbows - steelheads - LL salmon

But, i'm cool with adding a few of these next year if you guys really think it will bring a few more entries, but I'm tell you that we'll see the same dozen people posting. But, maybe if we have a warmer ice season, we might see more entries too. this past season was junk for C&R photo entires.

I could see the ID being an issue for a couple by picture, but not many. This winter was most definitely brutal for keeping fish out of the water for any period of time. We are due for a break next year. I can only assume adding species to the list would make people take more interest. If it is in fact the same old 12 guys, what do you have to lose? I know if I was targeting a certain species for most of the season, and it wasn't one on the board, I most likely wouldn't participate. I understand that the more species there are on the board, the more work that makes for you ( which the few of us participating definitely appreciate by the way ). But, something has to change in order to draw more people.

Splake and brookies Maybe, I know some can be a little hard to tell the difference

Bows and Steelies  albeit the same fish basically, Id just have a hard time believing someone would go through the trouble of bringing a steelhead all the way to a frozen lake to fool us all to win a braging rights tourney..

Confusing LLs for bows or steelies ? they look absolutely nothing alike, maybe with browns, I know there's been some debates on here distinguishing those 2.. As far as that i would think LLs would win the vote anyway..

I also think that if the sign up date deadline was pushed back just a mere 10 days it would create more participation (just for the braggin tourney)
Lotta folks arent even on the ice until a week or so into the new year and then start coming on the site.. I dont know this as fact, someone would have to look at the numbers.. Just seems to me like things get flowing here once the ice comes, and for a good number of people thats not until after the sign up deadline..

the problem with starting early is the tourney card.
Yes I know that we could go without a tourney card but to insure a current catch, we'll need a tourney card.
No since in having a NYbragg'n card only.

I think maybe i conveyed what i meant wrong. Push the date deadline to get into the NY bragin tourney further into january , for example, all entrants must be signed up for braggin tourney by Jan 10, 2016.. Maybe i had a brain fart, there is no sign up for the NY braggin tourney or is there ?

Yah and there are a good amount of people myself included who could fish on ice by december 1st easily every year, not trying to get the early 1st ice guys, more so the late ice guys..

Only have to be a member located in NY and have NY somewhere in your profile, either NY badge in signature or have NY in your location profile.

Steelhead can be caught ice fishing in any of the bays or estuaries of any creek along the big pond.  There would be no need to take them to another lake.

Title: Re: Congratulations!!!!!!! Thread
Post by: Fish-N-Adventures on Mar 25, 2015, 11:30 PM
people do fish the bays of the great lakes on the ice, so it's ice fishing and a rainbow/steelhead...
You know someone will do it.
Someone is going to catch a spawning LL and think it's a brown or the other way around, you know it's going to happen.
Someone is going to catch a splake and think is't a brookie, or someone is going to catch a brookie on a body of water that is out of season, you know it's going to happen.

All this maybe junk is why we don't normally add these species, but for next year, we will add a few of the trout species to see how it will play out.

I can imagine. Heart pumping and if you were working with a 6" hole, I'm sure you were wondering if it would fit, lol. Because I know the 17.5"er I pulled out of a 6" hole last year was jaw dropper too.  :afro:

Don't you freet, I can figure it all out when I measure up the fish. I'd rather have it 2" in on the tape measure instead of 1/2" not in the picture frame.
Thanks for the help backwoodsboy.  :afro:

Combsey - that is one hell of a walleye!!  :woot:
Any walleye over 30" is just totally awesome and look at that belly, one hungry and fat pig for sure.
Thank you for sharing it with us.

Well done to all contestants, especially with the challenging lack of good ice for most of the season!

Caught a 39" northern the last day of the warm up. Around Feb. 27. Walking in 5-6" of slush. Next day was open water. So it was a sweet catch to place first as my last fish of the season.
