With this cold snap do you think glendo will have fishable ice this weekend?
-
Hi Legerski,
Last Friday we fished Glendo with the boat. We put in at Reno and one other boat put in at Whiskey. The water temp was 36 degrees - air temp was 17 degrees. It was CHILLY out there. With this cold, there should be ice, but I would be real careful going all the way across to the mountain. I'll bet the bays will be okay. Did you ever do any good through the ice in Whiskey, Elkhorn, Muddy? Several years back, I heard of some fish caught through the ice in Elkhorn, but I have only ice fished at the mountain. You might call the Trading Post in Glendo. They might know the ice conditions and they might have minnows. Haven't been in Howards, but the electronic sign out front says "minnows" on it. Let us know if you find out anything. I'll do the same.
Be safe,
Keith

That's a good idea. You can get to some nice water without walking too far. For what it's worth, last year we did good with jigging raps. They are a bit expensive if you lose them in the rocks and there are lots of rocks, but we fished several times and never even bothered with minnows. Got lots of small fish and a few to eat most every time. Sure would like to get a few perch - that's my favorite - lightly breaded and deep fried! Man, if I keep thinking like that, I might have to give it a try Friday or Saturday.
Good fishing,
Keith

I guess were going saturday for sure if it ices up, maybe well see you out there
-
If anyone gos out this weekend will you post a note and let us know how you did and how the ice was. thanks gulp.
-
I would be real careful - last wednesday I went through and there was some ice on the shallows in the NW, but it was still open through the river channel and the rest of the main lake viewable from the Interstate. I was heading through last night around midnight and, though I couldn't see the water, it was the warmest stretch of road at 19F, when I left Denver it was -8 and -1 when I arrived in Casper. But if it the water was 36F last Friday it may could be forming great this week - but I definately stay away from the main channel.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but Keith how did you do when you fished it last weekend???
Thanks

Im planning to make a couple trips to Glendo over the break. Finally can squeeze a trip or two in. Thinking about the night of the 27 (saturday) through the morning of the 29 (monday). And then again for most of a day and part of the night on New Years Day. If any one is interested in getting together let me know it would be fun to get a big group together.

Todd,
Fishing was real slow. We caught one 18"walleye and a few carp. We blamed the combination of full moon and the large quantity of dead and crippled shad minnows - I guess that is as good a thing to blame as any.
We are going to go up tomorrow to see if we can get on the ice. Like Legerski suggested, we are going to try the area at the dam. We won't have to venture way out from shore like going from Reno across to the mountain. That would worry me until we have more cold weather. I'll let you know about the ice tomorrow evening.

Ya be safe tomorrow and good luck. If you get on I wont be able to sleep till saturday.
-
Lookin' forward to Saturday. I hope G-do has some ice.
-
Did any of you guys go out yesterday? Can you guys report on the ice?
-
checked it out friday, looked like 4to 5 inches at reno. somebody had a atv on and had drove across. didn't fish.
-
Did it look like they drove across from Reno? Any reports coming in, would be great. Planning a trip in the middle of January, should be safe ice by then?
-
fished for couple hours today, 8inch of ice at reno .two atv were across by the hills to the east, didn't caught anything. the ice had a lot of dead shad in it.
-
Sounds like your presentation has to be dead on. Thanks for the info.
-
headed up in the morning will report on the fishing tomorrow night
-
caught a lot of small walleye today and a few perch. only got one walleye worth keeping. action was fast paced just couldnt get into the bigger ones. ice was a solid 8 inches
-
was it safe for a wheeler in your opinion? I am going friday for sure I have a red honda and a red chevy w/ county 2 plates say whats up if u r there.
-
Thanks for the info, at least they are still biting with all the shad around.
-
could not get on ice today slush at shore extending out about 10feet.
-
were they bringing the water back up
-
Currently the inflow is 485 cu ft/sec and the outflow is 38. Glendo rises all winter and the water comes out from under the edges of the ice. Lots of times, a plank is needed to get on the ice because it is soft around the edges. Be careful out there.

last year a plank was needed but not when i went up there the other day. she was hard as a rock

Wasn't needed today either, but almost needed an anchor - it was WINDY!

how was the fishing today
-
The bite was pretty slow (or the wind made presentation difficult - or both). Six of us ended up with three walleyes and a few perch.
-
You guys lasted quite a while Keith, that wind was cold. We stuck it out until dark and there was a good bite about 4:30. We caught several small walleye and a couple nicer ones. It was dead all afternoon though. We caught one 21" right after we talked to you and not another bite till late.
