Willow Slough

Just called Willow Slough - They said there is still a lot of open water. Hoping for safe ice by the middle of next week.  :-[

Part of the lake is going to stay open- like did in first part of season. The geese keep it open. However, I am sure that there will be people getting some fish time in on Monday . Maybe even Sunday. If you have to get out and cant wait until then the channels at Maxi are safe.

Checked Willow Slough today.  East of the parking lot 1 1/2" to 2" about 10 feet off shore, about 100 to 150 yards out there is some open water, and by Wildcat Island (high bank island) there is some open water.  Back by Bird House Point right of the parking lot there is a big pressure crack and about 100 yards out at the end  of the crack is open water.  There was two shanties set up out back one by the Hill and the other off of Filbert Lane.

I dont believe that they will let you drive on the lake. I have never seen this happen in my years of fishing the Slough.

I haven't seen a vehicle on ice in Indiana since I was a kid in the early sixties and i think that was only for a few minutes.

Yea I knew he was joking about driving with the You Tube remark-thats why i said (for a few minutes)LOL
It would give us some intertainment tho-LOL

Been on Bass Lake in a truck but not by choice. Thought we were parking at the ramp but we launched instead. Crazies are on Wawasee all the time with under 10 inches and they fish right next to their trucks. Not for me!

Got this info right from the DNR site.

Four inches of ice      Needed for safe ice fishing
Five inches of ice      Needed for snowmobiling
Eight inches of ice     Needed to support the weight of a car or light truck.
Ten inches of ice       Needed to support a medium weight truck.

In the 60's My grandpa used to drive his 98 Olds out onto the ice. And that big old car weighed more than most trucks now days. Personally, I have never drove any of my cars onto the ice. I've seen it on Maxintukee and many other state owned lakes. But a game preserve may be differant.

Same here , they used to have races on Wolf Lake in Hammond and down at Cedar Lake back in the early 60s till a couple cars went thru, then they banned the races.

Still some open water. If you go to Mormon Hill all 3 to 4 inches of safe ice. If you fish by the headquarters you can fish the south-east side of the lake. Yesterday, there was a lot of open water by where the old channel was. May not be as much ice in it tomorrow, might only have 24 to 36 hrs of freeze time. Be careful and stay where the fishermen are and you should be o.k. Weed thru them becaise there are a lot of 5-7inchers. Try to find 5 fow.

Do you have to check in at the headquarters before you go out?

Just got back from Mormon Hill. Pounded em!! Got my limit (25) in 3.5 hrs. Caught alot of fish, blue moon glow, and pink/white glo demon, red spikes did the trick. Headed out to Loomis Lake in Valpo now, will report tonight when I get back. C-ya. Crappie Rob.

I saw an ambulance go out on WS and pick up a guy dead froze on a bucket once. I had commented to a guy near me that the guy never moved. 78 or 79 I am guessing maybe couple years earlier as ice was plenty thick in 76 and 77.

If I had to go when I was ice fishing I know that I would much rather be sitting on a bucket than frozen down a hole. It sucks either way. I guess the best way out is in your sleep, sleep, sleep.

Cant say for sure just know what parking spot it is because I duck hunt there alot. The best bet is to get to headquarters and they will be more than happy to give you directions. You may also inquire about Filberts Lane - which is on the north east of the lake. Just another spot to park.
