your personal best eye?
« on: Dec 06, 2012, 08:18 PM »
What is your personal best Indiana eye through the ice?

I think mine is 23.5" through the ice and 26" open water? Hoping to get a good one this year through the ice in Indiana waters .. planning a another Saginaw and Erie trip for A 30"+ wall hanger. But would love a Hoosier 29"+ through the ice instead.
There is only one theory about angling in which I have perfect confidence, and this is that the two words, least appropriate to any statement, about it, are the words "always" and "never."

I got a good one at Summit.  Didn't have a tape.  Open water right behind.  Beautiful fish.

Correct me if im wrong but I was told in theory for example a 28" eye weighs about 8lbs.  Or a 25" weighs about 5... Am I wrong?

Its gonna depend on the time of year and how well its fed. A female eye in these parts will start egg developement around late sept./ early oct. From there they just continue to put on weight with the continued formation of eggs as well as fat from eating to sustain the eggs. In the fall as the temps really go down, the eyes gorge themselves to build fat reserves for the comming winter where they may only get opportunities to eat every couple of days and there is not as much forage as there was in the spring, summer and fall.

Never caught one through the ice, but I don't try for them in either soft or hard water.  Caught a couple slightly over 8lbs on Erie in open water with my grand father many years ago, but that is not big at all for erie.  Get some smaller ones 16-22" in the St. Joe on occassion when fishing for bass.  Did catch one about 26" out of Magician lake in Michigan during a bass tournament that went about 6lbs.

Got one wading for steelhead that went about 8 lbs.  I would have been thrilled if I was fishing for walleye and got that.  Instead wasnt as excited as I should have been since I was chasing chrome.  Never got one through the ice yet.

The good ole days, when water actually froze... yeah we even drove a quad on it the day I caught these.  Anybody remember when we could stand on ice and catch fish?  Seems like so long ago!

It wasn't caught in IN, but just over the line in MI.  Nothing to brag about, but it is only the second keeper eye that I have caught through the ice.

12 inches - Summit Lake. I first thought it was a perch and almost kept it. (It was a little dark and I was out of light.) Released and caught another about 10 inches.  Hoping to do better sometime.

Open Water 25" St Joe River....honestly have not pulled one through an ice hole, but I am hoping to take a trip to Lake Erie this year if it freezes up. My buddy from work who keeps a boat on Erie and brings in 400-500 eyes every year on his boat has caught his 2 biggest ones through the ice there. They weighed 12 and 14 pounds. I'd be quite happy with either.
