Title: Fished the Kankakee
Post by: wallin on Feb 19, 2011, 08:12 AM
Bodeen and I hit the river thursday night for a few hours-nothing caught-talked to others and nothing much yet going on in this area.

I was on the point next to the point in the pic on Thursday around 2:30 because someone was on the main point and caught 2 Pike (21" & 23") along the ice in 30 minutes.

I keep hearing about guys catchin walleye and pike in the kank, i know farther down stream from st joe county it gets bigger, but are there eyes or pike in it around st joe county? its not all that deep here and only about 50 feet wide.

Yes both fish are there at the right time. Pike cruise through all the time and the walleye should be there soon but head back down stream after the spawn.

I was just wondering wear you all are talking bout fishing the kank at? I don't want exact spot. Just counties? General vicinity.

The eyes and pike I have caught so far this year are packed with eggs People don't want to deal with the snow and cold weather to fish the river at it's best which is now. The fish have the feedbags on to develop thier eggs to spawn soon, but you need to move around and fish slow to catch them. They are feeding heavily now but because of the water temp they don't move fast to eat, but take everything that is an easy meal. Jerk baits twitched and paused are hot now. Once the spawn starts they start to get lock jaw so go out now, move around and try different things and spots. When you catch 1 fish keep throwing to that exact spot again and again. the fish hold tight in holes in groups while traveling upstream. Good luck!

they spawn in early march dont they?

Now.  Wont say how, why, or where i know, but now is your answer.  Yes i do mean the Kank.

March?  Not necessarily.  Its temperature related, not time.  Here is a fairly good approximation.  38* and the male start.  42* and the females start and they fire up to 45, 45-55 is a so-so zone where you pick up alot of males hitting spawn sites but not so many females.  Then its a race to catch them before they disperse.  Walleye are not generally homebodies, even in lakes, even more so in rivers.  They can travel up to 200+ miles in a year.  This said, failing to watch the temps is the most common and costly error where walleye are concerned.  If you are waiting for a report from an area to say "it on" you likely will miss the run.

Knowing where more than one spawning area in a river or lake is massive because different areas warm up at different times.  In rivers it will be well back from the fast water out of the dam and work its way up to it following the temp changes.  More will be behind spillways and dams (manmade or not) because, quite simply, thats what they do, they travel as far up as possible before depositing their eggs.  Lakes are usually around a week or two behind rivers, but still  function much like the river.  The NE side of the lake will fire first, because it gets the most sun (we are north of the equator so its not the seeming 50/50) then move its way to the other side.

BTW  Nothing is hatching now so think big.  I would start with a large bait before all others.  This time of year my faves are large raps, and large minnows alone, spin rigged, or tipping a jig.

I wouldnt discount anything else but it is what it is.   No hatchlings = use adult bait.

Anyone happen to know what the water clarity is like or how high the river is? I looked at flow charts but I'm not familiar with what normal flows on the kank are this time of year. Was thinking of hitting the kank thursday and friday night, I'm assuming it will be fishable then and probably is now.

Another fish story. Without pics I have a hard time believing. Just saying. In Indiana 20 inches I don't think so. They may not be all that great to eat. But, I bet they would look great on the wall.

I beleive all the comments after the walleye and musky report are in jest becuase of the fact there are no pictures to show the once in a lifetime catch.  No pics with a claim like that is bringing out the sarcasm.

2nd that I'm 22 and have have 3+ years guiding experience for trout and salmon. Age is only a number not a skill level. My PB on Indiana trout and salmon steelhead 22 lbs, king 26 lbs, coho 18 lbs, lake trout 16 lbs, brown 17 lbs; all weighed on a certified scale. All but the lake trout have a place on my wall. I'm waiting for a 20 lbs plus laker for the wall everthing smaller gets released. My biggest Indiana largemouth is 8 lbs 24" have a pair of them on the wall. I have a collection of over 20 species of waterfowl on the wall, just got my Pope and young buck back from the taxi. If i get time i will have to take pics of the walls on my basement and post them. hopfully a 10 lbs eye will join the rest this year, my biggest eye is 26.5" maybe the kank will be good to me this spring :-) all i want is one big female...........

Guess you could probably assume i'm not married for how much crap I have mounted or how much fishing I do. All i can tell the ladies is don't try and compete with hunting and fishing becasue you ain't going to win ;D

Most came through in the flood of 2008 IMO.  Being nomadic fish, when that floodgates opened, walleye, musky, and a few pike dropped in to the cuurent and headed south.  Which is their way.  AFAIC, the fact that weve seen them every spring since then means they are dropping back and returning to spawn.  Ive personally pulled a 4' to the bank, quickly looked across river and wondered how in the world i was going to get it to the other side and get my pic with it, (for posterity) and had it decide the issue for me with a self release.   They arent in numbers exactly, but there are a few around.

Rivers are a catch all.

There are muskies in the Tippecanoe River system. These come from the lakes in the North Webster area (Webster, Tippy, and Barbee Chain). These are pure strain muskie, not tigers. Every spring some are caught especially in the Winamac area.

I have never seen a confirmed report of muskie in the Kankakee  River and based on the state stocking locations I have no idea where they could have come from.

Some people really are anal! Most lakes are over 100 acres and rivers more than 100 miles long but posting a name puts them on the spot! Ridiculous! Webster, Barbee Chain, and the Tippy have produced 40+ inchers for me. You still have to work to catch 'em,but there's plenty of nice fish in all of them. I came to this site to share info, but people like willow turn me off to this site! Anyone who has pm 'd me knows I disclose all info about a catch. I hope others catch trophies like I have!

What was tne name of that Drama thread last year?
Oh yeah- "AS THE AUGER TURNS".
Some days the auger turns slowly- like a Mora, other days it spins- like a Nils.

Had heard these are Tiger Muskies and are coming into the Dam from the Wabash, acording to a friend at the Club there.

Im going to go out on a limb and trow some simple biology and guesswork together for this one.

Not Tigers, just barred phase muskie.  If there was one i didnt see it caught and i can guarantee it was never recorded.  Ive been there when 4 were caught, counting mine, and i have an idea that some were repeat offenders as most all have been released.  If i could have at least got a measurement of mine i would have got a glass mount done.  I would never have kept it regardless of weight or length.  It was just to cool to have gotten 1 there.

We have a large percentage of Trophy release at JTCC, so its not far fetched to see the same boys and girls yearly since the 08 flood.  Having come through the dam in the past they will return to it to spawn.  After spawn they will likely drop back in the Tippe to some large hole and live the happy lazy life with few larger predators around.  Or they might hang who knows, i just know i see the most caught in March during their spawn.

Wabash? meh, i dont know.  The Zebra mussels have the Tippe running fairly clear, im not sure they would choose the Bash (course they may love it to death *shrugs*) over the Tippe, but yea, the general idea is the same.  They are coming back up from downriver during spawn, just not with the Wabash as a point of origin.  What ones the dam has spit out and havent been kept will do what they do.  Spawn, go down river where competition is less and come up to spawn.  Repeat.  So IMO.  They arent just returning, they are returning to where they came from.

Does that make sense?

Tippe Pike.   Ive seen less of these than muskie.  Oddly enough.  Not exactly what you would expect to see on the Tippe.

Pics of some of last years muskie are here.

Now, just so i dont join the hijacking of your thread i will say this.  Why does this matter to the Kank?  Because im at least an hour south of where i fish up there here on the Tippe.  If they made it this far down they are surely up there.  Ive caught northern up there as well.

Kank pike.

Mac at the Club there was the 1 that told me the DNR he talked to were checking out some of them that were Tigers and where they thought they were coming from-this was last year I believe.
