let me see your kenai mods!
« on: Dec 11, 2014, 04:40 PM »

Picked this up for my kiddo for xmas or his birthday which is shortly after xmas. First thing is to clean it up. Then probably skis on the bottom and maybe some lights!

I would make a smitty to put it on. I know if mine only had skis on the bottom it would still be a bear to pull.

I second the build a Smitty sled for it idea. I also put a folding boat seat on mine as well. I also added a couple LED light strips to light mine up.

Kenai on the Smitty sled.

Kenai lit up.

I got one for my kid for Christmas too.  I will watch this thread.  I have a smitty sled for my 2 person flip, will have to make another one now.

Here's a few more pics of my lighting set-up. I found the light strips on ebay. I have them wired into a project box from Radio Shack and each one is independently switched.

The battery and switch box.

The light strip over the rear bar.

The light strip over the front door bar.

I just bought a Kenai Pro a few weeks ago. I mounted 2 led bar lights on the tub to illuminate the flood and mounted a 3rd on the bar above my head to light up my lap for retie's and baiting hooks. I did the same as above and mounted a battery tray and wired in a toggle switch. I haven't made a smitty yet, compared to the 90lb Yukon I just sold, this thing should be a breeze to pull.

I have a love/hate relationship with my Kenai shack. I only paid $100 for it and couldn't pass up the deal but I really hate dragging this thing. All it does is grab the snow and drag it in front of the sled. I think I'm finally going to either build a smith sled or buy a snowmobile to drag it around.

Do you have the Kenai pro? I just got one and haven't had any ice to try it out on yet >:(  I haven't heard much about how the pro drags versus the Kenai and was curious.  I have a smitty for my suitcase that I most likely will use for my Kenai pro, but I was just wondering if anyone had a pro and have actually be able to use it?  I will be walking, not pulling with a sled.

Not really sure which one I have. Would it so "pro"on the side of it?  Not sure what the difference is just know that is a bad design from clam if there's snow on the ground or the ice

Yeah, it says pro on the side.  It also has a sliding, folding seat and a deeper tub, 22" I think.  Hopefully I'll get to try it out soon.

I wired mine with a toggle switch on the "hot" wire and a couple alligator clips to attach to a standard vex battery. I can't say how long they last since I haven't gotten to use it yet, but I'd assume quite a while being led's don't really draw a lot of amps.

I second the smitty sled, those kenais pull like a frozen dead body. I forgot the crossmembers to my smitty sled once and will never do that again. I would turn around after an hour drive just to go get them, or go to the closest fleet farm to buy 2x4s and a saw before I do that again.

The battery is a 12 volt 7ah sealed gel cell like a Vexilar battery. I'll have to open up the switch box to look at how I wired it again. I didn't make a schematic when I wired it. but I wired the two led strips so that each one has it's own switch so I can vary the brightness in the shanty.  The lights last a long time as I only use them when needed during the day.

Used double sided carpet tape with a rubber back carpeted floor mat in mine. Does a pretty good job keeping things from banging around ...

Hope I don't sound stupid, but what is a Smitty sled. Years ago I built a collapsable sled out of conduit for my clam and it worked great. Didn't steer real well but pulled very easily.
Don't fall in. Unless it's a big one.

A Smitty sled is an invention created by one of IS's esteemed members by the name of "Smitty"

Mine so far include a new shell and some White LED strips! More to come! Plan on some sort of battery box for the lights, a cell phone charger outlet etc.

Gotta figure out a new chair for the kenai. I like to lean back once in awhile but this one doesn't have a back on the chair!

A boat seat mounted on a swivel matches the hole pattern on the Kenai seat pad mount.
