Ice house heaters
« on: Oct 27, 2013, 11:03 AM »
I'm looking for information for the best direct vent heater. I have a 6 1/2 x 12 fish house that has a forced air furnace in it now. I'm tired of the battery thing. For those that have a direct vent, what brand do you have and why did you go with that picticular one. Thanks, boxcar

I was under the impression that the buddy style heaters are not safe in an enclosed/permanent shack?

I know the big buddies come with an O2 sesor that cuts it off if it gets too high, not sure about the regular size.  Weve used a big buddy in a 14 foot v nose trailer and had no problems.

Mr. Heater and their Big Buddy heaters have o2 sensors, hook either up to a 20lb bottle and you'd be good to go for a while. Mr. Heaters are around 90 bucks and Big Buddy's are, well I don't know, I'd say more, lol How big of an area are you looking to heat?

7x14 house. I was thinking a vented heater would be best.

That's a bit bigger than my Frabill Outpost, lol I cranked up my Mr. Heater just to see how warm it would get in there and the hub being black, sunny day but only about 5 degrees F out I bet it was well over 70 in there, I was sweating so bad with my ice bibs and hoodie on (the walk back to my truck was a bit chilly, lol. Ive seen radiant heaters run on propane that are anywhere from 24" on up, just a thought.

I have the buddy heater, it's great and I cook with it too. My flip over has vents for air circulation, never had a problem with CO.  I have a recon dlx from frabill and the buddy heater warms it up nice in 15-20 degrees out with wind.

I've used the big buddy heater in my clam xl 6000 big foot, works great until there's low oxygen in the air and then it keeps trimming off on me in the middle of the night.

This is another good option from Mr. Heater, not vented but provides a little more BTU's than the Big Buddy, I have this cabinet heater in my 8X12 and it heats it up no problem, I have a big buddy that I use in my smaller shack and popup, O2 sensor is great, and cuts out to make it safe, open the door get some fresh air in, and away you go.

Sorry, but why anyone would rely on an O2 sensor to keep them alive when things can easily go wrong is beyond comprehension.   Besides, non vented burners give off an awful lot of moisture as water vapour in the combustion process.  You're trying to warm your hut, not turn it into a wet sauna when it's 20 below out.  With any sort of hard wall shack, I would go the extra length and get a vented heater.

I use a Mr.Buddy wall mount in my sleeper shack. Never really had a problem with a condensation issue....maybe  have to wipe the table off a bit from time to time...

I tend to stay out on the ice for 3-4 days at a time. Had the O2 sensor trip once....unit shut right off. Opened a window for a bit....

The Empire heaters are NICE! Would love to get one but WOW!!! a little pricy for me right now!

I have a blue flame heater in my perky and it does put out some moisture but if you get double pained and insulated windows you shouldn't have amy problems. Or if it is an option wood heat is a dry heat.

Does anyone run the battery operated CO detectors in their shacks?  I put them at bed height for obvious reasons.  I also run a big buddy heater in my shack.

I have this small wood stove. I cut and split wood for it the right size and it works very well.

That sucks, mine has worked very well for me for the last two years, I had confidence in it since it is a Mr heater product and the Big Buddy I've had for years works like a charm.

Yeah I was choked because it was the perfect size for my shack! I haven't a single problem with any of my other Mr heater stuff, maybe princess just got a bad batch.

We had that Mr heater cabinet heater to heat ourbgarage and I have to say it was a pice of junk. We returned it and bought a new generation propane torpedo heater and that works awesome. The real problem with the cabinet heater is that it was just porly constructed.
