Where do you keep your Heater Buddy in a flip-over?
« on: Dec 06, 2012, 09:34 PM »
Got a 1-man flipover (Clam Scout TC) and the 2-speed Heater Buddy at the end of the "season" last year.  The few times I got out, I could never figure out where to put the Heater Buddy while hot.  Putting it on the ice in the front corner is what I ended up with, but this is in the way when exiting the shelter, and it always seemed like the sidewalls were in danger of melting if they blew into the heater.  Putting it behind me in the sled seems safer, but put lots of loose gear at risk of melting.  Any mods for "mounting" a heater buddy to your flip-over sled so it is not in the way of anything?  Can you run it with the back side touching the plastic sled sidewall without melting the sled?

Ive got a yukon, so a 2 person, but I keep it in front of me as well.  I have a small board with some screws through the bottom that I set it on, so it doesnt slide around on the ice.

I just bought a shapell fx200 and the tub is 60" X 44" wide.  I have all kinds of room so I am going to set it up so I can put the heater in the tub with a heat sheild around the bottom and the walls.  will post pic of mods when done.

I leave mine in the Cabela's bag with the front unzipped. Never had a problem with melting anything. Just wait a few minutes after turning it off to let it cool before zipping it back up. I put it behind me in the back of my sled...which is actually the front when you are pulling it around.

I have a regular scout and a pro tc. I use a coleman power cat catalytic witha fan. It keeps me warm enough.

Check out the pic. I used a buddy heater that I borrowed from a friend at first and it cooked me. This seems to keep it good enough and 2 yrs ago it was -22f one day and I was fine

I didn't like it in front because I was afraid my line would blow over and touch the grill and then melt and drop my jig down the hole.

I have made that mistake. But it wasn't the wind that blew my line over. I was jiggin gills and got into something HUGE and when I finally got the fish near the hole, I got up to try to get it thru the ice and a shwet sound and a little smoke and the fight was over.....only make that mistake 1 time.

I was watching a show with Dave Genz a few days ago and he now has what looks like an aluminum plate mounted a couple inches in front of the burner of his Portable Buddy which he says keeps it from burning something that gets in front of it. Looked like it could work to me.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

Yea, I have seen a video where Genz puts his heater behind him and hangs it on two metal tabs that are mounted on his sled. He dremeled two holes in the heater so it would hang on the tabs.

I have seen that Genz video where he hangs it on the metal tabs on the side of the tub.  But I thought that this was for holding it in place while moving around.  I didn't think he kept it there with the heat running.  Does the backside get hot enough to melt the plastic tub if is running in that position?

I run my buddy heater using that genz method.  No problems, works great!!

Like I mentioned before, I leave the cabelas bag on mine and just unzip the front cover. The back doesn't get hot at all. At least I've never noticed it getting hot. My bag doesn't have any burn spots on the inside.

OK, I'll try mounting mine that way and keep it behind me in the tub.  Anybody have a link to the Genz video where he mounts the heat shield on the front burner side of the Buddy heater to protect other stuff in the tub?  As long as I am waiting for ice, I want to get as many of these nickel-n-dime mods done as possible.

Yea same here. I would like to see that one also. I seen the one where he mounted to the back of the tub. Another good idea  from the man

Here's what I came up with for transporting, storing and using my Mr. Buddy in my Clam Nanook: It's nice for transporting and putting in near my ice holes. There is no chance of it tipping over.  the Mr. Buddy "locks" to the screws to the milk crate making it nearly impossible to tip over.

Icebucketjohn - nice idea.  Keeps it portable and stable.
ASATMillerbluegill  - thanks for posting, but that is not the link I was referring to.  Subsequent to that video, Genz apparently did a mod where he mounts a heat shield in front of the burner, providing some added protection to stuff behind him in the tub.  I have not seen that mod and would like to view the original youtube or wherever he posted it.

i have not seen a video explaining the heat shield mod, but i have seen the heater in person. it's a pretty crude arrangement.. sheet metal with holes drilled in it and held onto the heater with wire as i recall
