Glove question
« on: Sep 03, 2012, 05:24 PM »
Hi Guys,

Its getting to be that time of year again. And im gunna need a new pair of gloves this year.
Ive decided on the Frabill FXE Mittens. Im going to use a thinner pair of windproof fleece flip gloves for liners.

Im sure alot of you guys do something similar. So my question to you is this.
How many sizes up do you go to ensure your hand still fits in the mitt with the liner on?
I generally wear mediums, would a large work? or should i go XL?
I have to order online, and returning for a different size can be a pain.

Any and all info is much appreciated.
Thx

I prefer all of my gloves to be larger then needed so that I can pull them off easily when running for a flag.  I use cheap liners and change them out when they get wet.
I'd go with the XL for that reason.

Awesome Beever, ty for the info.
Im thinking a little extra room for a hand warmer will be good too.
Im provoking the ice fishing gods this year by challenging them to get my hands cold.
Heres hoping they accept and things are much colder than last year.

If anyone reading this is looking to do the same thing here is what im going with.

Ya I cant wait to get out this season. I dragged my box out this weekend and have begun getting it in order (need to replace the lid hinges).
We definitely gotta hook up again this year for some fishin. Think im gunna broaden my scope this year. Went solely after pike last season. Gunna get back to the local spots for perch, bass, salmon, and trout this year.

Did you ever get the walleye you were after last year?

as with your feet in boots, leave room in your gloves.  the tighter the colder imo.

Itchy for any ice man. I tried to setup a tilt on my rum and coke the other day cause there were a few ice cubes in it.
It took slap to the back of the head from the wifey to snap me out of it..

Caught a good buzz tho, so i didnt get skunked..    ;D

Well i got me new gloves in, and was sad to see that the combo i listed above wont work (glomitt inside an XL Mitten.)
I can get my hand in the XL mitten with the glomitt on, but its pretty tight, and getting them off is tuff.
Looks like ill use the glomitt for hauling/setup and warmer days.
I need to find a pair of cheap windproof half finger gloves that i can wear as a liner when i use my mittens on the cold days.

Any suggestions?

Those are basicly what i got, only in the glomitt version.

The neoprene palms make sliding them into and out of the mitten hard due to how "grippy" it is.

I just ordered a pair of these. Ill let you know how they fit in the XL mitt when they come in..

On the subject of gloves, I have noticed in some pictures guys are wearing what appear to be surgical gloves while fishing, can anyone explain why?

I use the hand muff that goes around your waste put hand warmers in there and I'm good to go all day.
I also put my bait in there the heat really gets them wiggling.
In the past i would use the flip mitts and stick the toe warmes with the tape that ruin your socks in the flip that worked well too.

Guys use the surgical (latex) gloves for a few reasons.

They are very thin, almost unnoticeable, and water proof. Making baiting, tending tilts, unhooking fish, alot easier. Water beads right off them, so your hands never make direct contact with the water, thus never get wet. They also prevent any oils from you skin (gas, bacon grease, cigarettes) from making contact with your bait. Many fisherman believe the transfer of these oils to your bait will prevent a fish from striking. This year i plan to try wearing a pair of latex gloves over my fleece half finger gloves. Basically waterproofing my half finger gloves, while still allowing for the agility of using my bare finger tips. Should make slipping in and out of my mittens easier as well.

The only problem I have had with them is there is no way for the natural moisture/sweat of your hands to escape making your hand clamy (basically wet) inside them. I personally use my bare hands and carry a towel with me to dry off as im tending my tilts. My hands go right back into my gloves after that.
I know this doesnt happen to everyone, so if your one of the fortunate few, go for it.

So out of curiosity I have a question.....Your buying one of two pairs of the best mitts on the market, your hands shouldnt get cold. Why do you feel you need the liners?

I only want the half fingers for when my hands arent in the mitts. Such as jigging, baiting, setup, unhooking a fish.
Having a pair that will fit into the mitts means i can have them on at all times.

I wear Elk or Deer Hide chopper mitts with wool surplus liners when I wear gloves.  Easy on Easy off.  I also use a muff with hand warmers whenever I can, which is most of the time, unless its really frigid.  Used to be you could trade a couple of hides in for a nice pair of choppers.  I dont think the hides are worth quite as much anymore.....

I fish bare handed.  I like the feel of the bite as I hand line.  I only use a rod for lake trout.
Warm mittens are important though.

For perspective sake. I usually wear medium gloves. My hand measures 8in from tip of my middle finger to base of my palm.
The Glacier half finger gloves (medium) just came in and fit nicely into the Frabil FXE XL mitt. Slide on and off with ease.
Plenty of room in the mitt for a hand warmer as well if needed.

I agree walleye, whats why i use fingerless gloves.
