Holy crap!!! That's the biggest smelt I've ever seen!! Bet they make a nice snack! Nice pan of venison there, too. Yum yum! Nice pic's!

Good to see your getting more chances to ice fish in NS. I was born and raised there but moved 11 years ago. When I left I think there were only a couple lakes  in Dartmouth where ice fishing was legel  and they seldom froze over.I sure miss eating those smelt. The ones up here never see salt water , the flavor just isn't the some as the ones from home.
 Thanks for sharing the pics.
There is nothing better than the smile on a childs face when they see the fish come up through the hole.

Wow those are really big smelt! Down in NY we hammer them at night but nothing that size; sometimes they jump right out of the hole and if I am hungry I eat one right then and there- did you ever smell them, they smell just like watermelon. Nice pics.

They DO smell like watermellon!! Tell me fish can't smell the difference between their natural food (smelt) and the out of state shiners, etc that we're forced to use because of the bait laws in place here in NY. It's illegal for me to go jig a bunch of smelt to use for bait in another lake! So we are using bait from Arkansas!! Go figure....

You got bent! BTW hugh smelt. I'd consider mounting one...maybe chasing a pickerel!
