I will be building S.S. #1 and 2 week of Thanksgiving.  Picking up the skis and lumber this week. Hardware at the ready.

Any reason for 4 skis over 2?

Yeah. I want the front skis to turn like a wagon instead of scraping on the ice. Don't know if it'll work like I plan. But I'm going to try.

Hmmm....interesting. I kinda like the idea. Let us know how it works out.

Love my Smitty Sled!

Do any of you hot wax your skis? If not, I highly recommend giving it a try! The wax iron is $50 (twice what the sled cost to build) but after using it once I know I made the right choice. If you're near Wind Lake WI and want to try it without dropping the $50 on the iron, shoot me a PM.

I was thinking if I were in a spot where pulling it over sand, gravel, asphalt, etc., I would wait until I got onto some snow or ice before putting my sled onto the Smitty. It might help a little bit anyway.

pullling a loaded smitty or any type of sled or shanty on anything but ice or snow, is a b***h if you're pulling by hand. cleared parking lots especially.Almost like trying to push a chain. seen lots of vids about kids and dogs pulling loaded sleds out on the lake, but no vids in the parking lot. I use one, but lots of times I dump it from the truck as close to where I access the river or lake I'm going to fish, and leave it there when I come back before I get the truck. Lots of smittys with wheels for a reason.

All this talk about Smitty Sleds convinced me to make one. $6 for skis at Goodwill and $3 for hardware I didn't have. Everything else was sitting in my garage. Can't wait to see if they are worth the hype. ;D

just make sure that rope is about 16 feet long. you want to be about 8 feet ahead of it when pulling.

Anyone ever spray rhino lining/truck bed liner on their cross braces where the sled sits? Does it help prevent  the sled from sliding around?

In fact, my buddy has some roof felt I'm going to lay down first then spray that, won't soak up the bed liner spray as much as the wood. And you know what else missoula? You're not just another pretty face...YOU'RE A FRIGGIN' GENIUS!!! :roflmao:

Rhino lining seems to decrease the sliding around a fair amount..

has anyone tried doing away with hardware/pins to hold crossbars at their joints to the risers and just cut the wood to hold its self?

stand the crossbars so the skinny end faces up/down. cut out the crossbar half way near the end so it sits on top of the risers that are cut the same depth as the remaining crossbar sections. the straps to hold the cargo would make sure the joints don't come apart along with the weight. if the joints are too sloppy you could glue more wood on the inside of risers at the joints.

thinking how they used to do things before metal came to be.

Looking for some ideas on using skis attached to the sides of a shanty tub which could be lowered or swung to the outside of the tub when you stop to set up. Skis would also be easy to remove when transporting in a vehicle. Already have a smitty but my son has an Evo II and its heavy as hell. Something along the lines of the lake runner style.
God grant me strength to catch a fish
So large that even I
When telling of it afterwards
May never need to lie.
