Author Topic: What do you use for oil in your ATV (Read 6935 times)

I got a Honda Rubicon this summer used. Saw the question for what to use in an auger and thought the same thing for atv's. Is Synthetic ok if it was not started when new. What do the rest of you use.

Castrol 4t motorcycle oil in 10-40 .
Seems to work well for my ATV especially in extreme cold for easy starting . I also use 2 oz of sea foam in the oil and 3oz to a full tank of gas .

I use 0w40 in my Sportsman 500 and it starts in the wickedest cold, even after a -20F trailer ride.

I am usually an Amsoil booster but............ I had to stop running it in my 01 Cat. The 0W-40 says that it's ok for wet clutch applications but after a few oil changes with it I was starting to notice gear slippage and blow by coming out the exhaust. I have now gone back to the factory Cat oil. It seems to have a little more "traction" in it. (lol, not usually a desireable oil property)

Amsoil = too good for my machine.

Are you using Arctic Cat 0W40 synthetic now instead of Amsoil?

I use spectro oil,they claim to have the highest service rating in the industry,set by the API.amsoil,has 3 different synthetic oils,but the dealer cant tell me why 1 is better or worst than the other?also i was told that amsoil is a amway product,not a fan of pyramid sales.

Amsoil is based in Superior Wisconsin, and to the best of my knowledge is not connected to Amway in any way.

I allways run Valvoline 10-40 atv in my 03 Foreman (4000mi.) never any clutch slippage or blow by. The dealer warned me not to run fully synthetic. You may be able to run synthetic in a Sportsman because they're no wet clutches. A Rubicon has multiple wet clutches and would use extreme caution with synthetic oils.

Thanks Farley. Thats the answer I was looking for. Its the last thing I would want to do is screw something up on The Atv by using something that would reck it.

Run Amsoil full synthetic in my Bombardier Outlander. Runs and starts great even in the coldest extremes to the hottest days!!!

I run Arctic Cat 0W40 synthetic in my kitty because it has wet clutches and the oil is designed for this application. Maybe your dealer is thinking specifically about hondas. I run this oil because Arctic Cat recommends it after break in.

I think arctic cat atv's have belt drive CVT transmissions NO WET CLUTCHES!

400 Auto. With the exception of the youth models, Arctic Cat automatics all have the Duramatic transmission which has wet clutches and belt drive.

Lots of Cat's have the semi automatic, shaft driven, wet clutch transmission. Just not the new ones. Mine is a 2001 300cc.

Before I bought my Cat a looked at just about all brands except Can AM. The local Honda dealer tried to tell me that Honda is the only ATV with a wet clutch. I like Hondas, but not liars. When I went to pick up my cat a guy drove in and said "I just came from the Honda dealer and didn't like the way he talked. I want that Cat 5oo Auto.". I guess I'm not the only one around here that doesn't like BS.

Honda lost out on a sale from me just from the way I was treated at the dealership. The sales manager talked to me like I was 2 years old, so I said I am going to the Polaris dealer. I went over there and bought a 500HO Sportsman that day. Some people will just never realize that customer service is a big part of the sales process.

I was looking at a Rubicon also. Nice machine. I asked the dealer if he would store it at his dealership for a week until I could buy a trailer and come for it. He said he didn't have a place to keep it. Out behind the building was a large fenced in area with quite a few machines sitting there. The Cat dealer kept my machine inside a building until I could buy a trailer. Just a difference in dealers I guess.
