Lite weight propane tanks.

Anybody ever use one?  Are they good for the cold weather?  What are your experiences with them?

I was thinking about trying out a 5 or 10 pound tank this year.  Try and cut down on a lil weight when you gotta drag out.

I use a 4lb tank.  It usually lasts the whole season (Mr. Buddy).  I like it because you get it refilled just like the 20lbers, it isn't temperamental like the 1lbers, and it is supposed to be refilled (not like the 1lbers).

I have two 4lbers that I alternate between.  Before the start of each season, I hook them up to my BBQ grill and drain them, then get them refilled for the season.

Definitely worth the time and the $$.

Are you asking about the fiberglass tanks? (Don't know if they are fiberglass, carbon fiber or what.) I have read posts by guys that use them and love them. I checked into them and decided that they are too spendy for an old retired geezer like me.  ;D
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

Jeez, for the price of one 5lb regular tank ($30 at costco) you get about 10 years worth of free refills.

Costco sells the 5lbs????  Ive never seen them in there.  I mainly shop at BJ's.  My outlaws belong to Costcos.  I like that price better.

so the only price I have found for a 4 pounder was $130+  and the price I have found for a 5 pounder was like $50+  and for a 20 pounder its like $30.  Am I wrong or is this going backwards??!!  I mean outside of how common the 20 pounders are, it HAS to take more material to make them so what gives???

Supply and Demand.

well that stinks.  What's to stop me from taking 3/4 away from a 20 pound tank to make it a 5 pound tank??  I mean outside of the fact that 1) I don't know how to weld, 2) I don't know if the weld will hold up under pressure and 3) it's pretty stupid.  but how plausible is that for someone who does know how to weld and doesnt care how stupid it is if the weld were to hold???

I think your gas supplier will refuse to fill an altered tank. Even if it passed a pressure test, I wouldn't want to take on the potential liability, as a gas supplier that is.

what he said.....  I would rather get the extra workout for the twenty at $20 than making my sled 15 pounds lighter for another $110.  At the point I'm at right now, 15 pounds isn't worth that much to me.  Supply and Demand SUCKS!!!

Its a specialty item that probably requires retooling at the factory.  That's why I was looking at the composite tanks.  A little cheaper, but still pricey.   For the times that I need the extra gas, ill probably drag the 20 pounder out.

I have a 4 1/4 and just picked up a 5lb, both from cabelas. I know they worked with no trouble at -20 and last a long time with the buddy heater.

How is the composite in the cold?   Any issues?   I worry about it cracking or something like that.

What is the run time on the 11 lbs vs the 5 lbs?  How much do you use it vs how long into the season can you make it before having to refill them?

Thanks

had it out many times at -20  Im sure they are tested to much lower than that for certification   it lasts just as long as 11 one lb bottles   lol  like I said I never timed its use  and I dont just use the tanks on the ice  extra heat in the garage  ect  but it is expensive to buy  but is so lite  and makes it easier for me so the value in my book made it       Sometimes I run 2 big buddies off it  or the grill / stove   so figuring out run time would be hard to do  due to the draw and btus being used   as a little buddy is 9000   big buddy 18000  or the silent glow heater drawing 110000 btus   it looks low I take it in and fill it

The fiberglass tanks may not be recertified. This means 12 years of use then throw it away. Steel is much cheaper in the long run.

According to what I've read on the manufacturers websites all of the composite tanks I have looked into are re-certifiable.

Am I misreading these websites then and these tanks lifespan is 12 years and done? I am seriously looking at getting the same tank you have hazzy.

I still like the lighter weight idea, we'll see what happens 12 years down the road !
