which bait?
« on: Feb 17, 2010, 02:44 PM »
So i have a choice between smelt, goldens, herring and mackerel.  what would you use? ...I'm setting them up dead 1 ft off bottom in 15-5ft of water.

I'm located in Poultney as well. Just as a reminder, in VT we cant use Smelt or Goldens unless trapped or caught on the body of water where they are being used. That being said, use the smelt and goldens if its legal. I checked with a warden about herring and mackeral, and he said that technically it should be okay since the rule really doesnt cover saltwater fish. Where are you getting herring around here? just wondering since I've been looking for some as well.

Nice. Hey this is a longshot but if your going to be in the poultney area and are picking up some herring from your shop down there, would you mind picking me up a dozen or so and we can meet up in town?

Smelt works good for deadbait.

I've never used the others.  Are they oily like smelt?

I think that's the reason that pike really go for the smelt when they are dead.
They have a nice oily scent.

They also work when jigged, depending on how large they are.

Hope this helps,

Wiener
