I start with waxies usually but if there finicky and bite super light i feel i hook more of them with spikes. So if i set the hook and miss a few i switch to spikes.

I like to use red or natural spikes on a tungsten jig with the occasional size 12-16 nymph/scud fly 6”-12” above it tied on a loop. I haven’t used wax worms in years. Just started using flies. I don’t tip those with anything. They work rather well.
Last year, I caught an 11” gill on a bare UV orange size 3 rippin’ rap. That day changed the way I looked at spoons and raps for bull bluegill. If they want it, they will hit it.

Waxies seem to float more than spikes or mousies. I don't waste with live waxies. Gulp ones seem to work well as they are on a string line cut as want. Otherwise I just buy spikes. Key is to find them active.
Gills for me seem to like tiny teardrops.
To big , not so good.
I stick a teardrop in my fly vise and attach rubber legs a small amount of hackle or Krystal flash. Very sparse.
Tungsten heads seem to work best and drop faster.

Ya know.
I keep saying I need to just bring garden ( trout) worms, even yesterday.
I think you are my inspiration for week 11 on ice.
Thank you

The answer is waxworms. Good news is if the bait shop is out you can just go to petsmart. Small jig is also true. Orange or green dots. Sometimes horizontal jigs will crush vertical jigs. It depends mostly on the lake. Earthworms can work well but only small pieces. If you put a whole worm on they probably won't eat it.

Waxies seem to work better but spikes close second but what I really love is when I can catch them regularly on plastics....
