Congrats on finally getting your own sub-forum New Brunswick! I'm from Maine, right on the border, Edmunston area.

From Moncton but the hard-water fishing sucks in this area (other than Silver Lake in Sackville) so I sometimes travel to the Grand Lake area though it makes for a long day.
Mostly I fish smelts with a spear anywhere from Rexton to Shemogue but bought a licence this year so I can get back into wasting my time chasing trout lol. My fishing pal won a complete ice-fishing package in a draw so I plan to take advantage of that. (Of course he won his complete kit right after I shelled out big bucks for a Eskimo tent, auger and heater!)

Smelt with a spear must be different, I catch them with hook and line. I would like to try spear but don't think it is legal here.

From Richibucto but now live near Saint John. Ice fish the Kennebecasis mostly (Cameron Rd, Renforth). Started hake fishing a few years ago. They seem to be making a comeback. If anybody wants to buy homemade smelt spears, I know a guy who makes awesome ones for $22. PM me.

If by "here" you mean someplace in New Brunswick, then if you're fishing tidal water and are fishing smelts, it's totally legal.

No, I'm in Maine. I doubt it is legal here, rule states hook and line. They pass close enough under my shack to spear though.

Our regs say that too, but I checked with DFO one year (Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans, aka the feds) and they told me as long as it's in tidal water and we're not spearing sport fish, we're good to go. Check with whomever is in charge of your tidal waters just for craps and giggles.

Thanks, can't wait to get out. This weekend sounds like its out of the question, hopefully the weather isn't to hard on the ice conditions

The warm weather nad rain we are forcadted to get will make it temporarily messy aith lots of surface water n soft edges but a couple cold nights after itll mKe the ice better. All that surface water will freeze up..add ice thru no insulation from the snow and itll be easy going

My fear is that much rain all at once could bust up the rivers and have to start over from scratch

Connecticut, USA.

No more ice down here.

Don't know anything about NB other than you have ice!

Like to start at some smaller lakes that have good action, especially bass.

Any info would be much appreciated.

Not much for bass in NB. We have no largmouth and most of the good lakes for smallmouth are closed for icefishing unfortunatly. If u were planning a trip up to fish and want good action if suggest fishing thr Grand lake chain of lakes. Its tidal water so even non residents do not need a license. French and Indian lakes  and parts of Grand have geat action for chain pickerel and yellow perch with easy access. Grand lake is huge and has everything from vhain pickerel to burbot and whitefish. Maquapit is  also a good lake but is harder to access. Great lake for white and yellow perch pumkinseeds. Pickerel are less common but they are usually big when u do get them.  Feel free to pm me and i can give u more info.
