Alternative brookie baits
« on: Dec 16, 2013, 11:16 AM »
I've always used shiners or smelts for brookies under ice, but I was reading today some people prefer using worms or corn.  Has anybody tried these methods that could attest to whether they are decent alternatives or not?  I mostly use tip ups when fishing brook trout so I can't really see corn working unless it was given some movement by jigging it, but any info or forum direction would be great.

I caught my biggest trout to date on a daredevil with a piece of green onion as a trailer. I don't see why corn wouldn't work, but we use worms (wax/crawlers) for tip-up sets

I've used worms, but  dace minnows are usually my first choice.

the corn or power eggs will catch rainbows but the brookies and browns go for bait and worms.

I've had more flag trips than hook sets with worms but since I know it isn't the worm tripping my flags I am sure they work. My experience is with both rainbows and brookies taking worms.  I am hoping my new system will produce more hook sets this year.

Could be an interesting story there. What state of mind when that onion clad Daredevil was lowered down the hole ?
Any other unusual combinations that didn't work ?

I'm probably wrong since no one else has said anything, but it thought corn was illegal to use as bait?

Haha knew that was coming. Sober as a judge and my long time friend was there to witness and swat the fish outta the hole. We had run outta baitfish and worms for the day and they were hitting just about anything you threw down the hole. He had chinese leftovers so we started using that. Not gonna divulge what kinda chinese though. That could be my ticket to the tourney this year.  @) ;D @)

May God bless and keep you always, may your wishes all come true.
May you always do for others and let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars and climb on every rung,
May your hands always be busy, may your feet always be swift.
May you have a strong foundation when the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful, may your songs always be sung.
May you stay forever young.

Yeah that was my next question, is using corn illegal?  I looked in the book but there didn't seem to be anything about what baits were illegal besides certain types of baitfish.

I think the corn thing comes from guys used to open the can and drop it down the hole and let the oils and corn float out sorta like a chum line. I have heard of guys using beaver carcasses also. Always wondered if it worked but not looking to have a meeting with johnny law soo guess its a mystery   ;D
