North Hero State Park
« on: Jan 29, 2019, 09:51 AM »
I haven't been up to check to see if the gate is locked again this year.  Anyone been up there to check it out?  The last time it was opened up in the winter it seemed like people really tore it up around there.

It is a shame they are locking it because it gives nice access to some productive ice fishing water. I heard that they lock it due to vandalism a year or two ago. There are state fishing accesses just south at Stony Point and Kings Bay on the inland sea side and Dillenback on the Ransom's Bay side but unless someone had a wheeler it is a long way to the tip of North Hero island.

there was like 18" and glare on sunday. got some snow yesterday, but it was light and most likely will have blown off.

I went there last year to fish and was also disappointed to find the gate locked.  Sad to hear it is locked again this year.

someone should find out who within the state makes the decision to have it locked.

I know a friend of mine who is a fisherman and chief of our town fire dept has talked with the state people. A couple of years ago they chained off the back parking lot at Knights Point State Park. That closed easy walk on access for the guys who like to chase flat fish in Hibbard Bay. A few of us finally got them to remove the chain and plow out that back lot. Sometimes all it takes is a few calls.

I have dealt with Mike on a couple of occasions at the Dillenback access. Good guy who will listen gets something done.

Anybody know if the gate it still locked?   If it is i'm thinking of running up on a wheeler from the access on the east site of North Hero or crossing from Dillenbeck.  Any thoughts?

Pretty sure it's still locked, and heard that there is a very large pressure ridge right off the access on the east side (last access before the park).  Bring a chainsaw if you want to get a machine across it.

i cross them all the time and keep a spud bar on my wheeler. I look for a low spot and then use the spud bar to chisel down the ridge and it makes a nice bridge to cross the gap. Just have to make sure no open water on either side.
