Ice updates 1/22
« on: Jan 07, 2022, 08:16 AM »
This snow will likely make a slush that isn’t as strong as black ice, but will promote freezing. Arctic temps coming and ice will form.  Many places should be locked up and fishable next weekend. Yay!
If you can't play nice, get off the ice!

I got all my gear out last week, ran the augers, charged the flashers, waterproofed the tent, new rigs on tipups, etc. Then I put it all back away when it was 50 and raining haha. I'm looking forward to getting it all back out this week.

Looks promising, I’m ready to go as well. Hopefully this cold stays around for a while. Be safe gentleman

Doesn't seem like there are too many of us over here in CT. We should try to get together this year if we get safe ice far enough south.
I'm headed to the birks this weekend. See what I find.

There are a lot of us. Just that most do not post. They look and read but don’t reply, which is fine.

Also, I am happy to get together as it’s a social sport. I host a class trip most years as I’m a teacher. I’ve had close to 100 on my trips. Pretty cool introducing them to a new sport. Kids love it because the tip ups get set and then they play.

I would be heading to NW corner or the berks today, but I got rooked into coaching my daughter's basketball team. Game every Sat or Sun (or both) so it will put a dent in my scouting/fishing time. I need some ice closer to home!

I found some "safe" ice locally that I will be on Sunday morning. I will only be fishing 4 fow at the most. Next week I  bet we will all be out.

I drive by some small ponds in the SE corner today, not checking ice but driving the kids around to sports. Everywhere was still open, probably because of the wind last night. Cold and windless tonight though

I agree. There is ALOT of us. I know at least a dozen people who don't even use this site at all who are waiting. Going to be picking up a few pounds of shiners for the season this week. Everything is rigged up, batteries charged. Be safe!!!

I stayed on open water til about a week ago this year, but I’ll check some stuff up here in the NW corner this week.  There was majority open water last Monday on wood creek pond when I checked it, and that’s usually one of the first ponds to freeze up here.  Checked buel on Saturday as well, and no one there, no evidence of anyone going on.

I checked Mohawk on Saturday. Not ready then. Had snow on thin ice with overflow in between.
West side was close, but not thick enough for my liking.
There will be places ready this week.

I’m up on the north eastern boarder with Massachusetts. Some smaller waters had 3.5” yesterday morning . I was walking on some ice while spudding .

I’m hoping to fish Mansfield or bantam Friday . With the temps the next 3 days I think there’s a good chance

I heard someone was on Bantam South Bay.  Bantam was mostly open water from what I heard. With the wind accompanying the cold, I am doubtful about open water locking up.
However, areas already frozen should thicken.

I hope to get on either bantam or Mansfield for pike . I live 15 minutes from quaddick but the past 5-10 years fishing at quaddick has gone down hill big time . So I’ll try somewhere else maybe

I agree with fishon, south cove had some people but there wasn’t much real estate. Should be better by this weekend but that wind won’t help its cause. If you do go I would expect you’ll be sharing your spot with quite a few others. So bring plenty of food to share with your neighbor. Be safe gents.

I have the day off Friday so my fingers are crossed for 4"+ somewhere where I can bring my kids out with me to chase some flags. Looks like NW ponds should get there.

Oh quaddick is a good fishery . It just use to be ALOT better . 10 years ago in one day I ice 3 pike over 12 lbs one was 21.8 lb one was 17.4 and one was 13.5 . With 8 other smaller pike . Now days you fish it and you’ll get some pike but you have to wait and the big ones are few and far between . Still a great place to fish especially cuz it’s the closest pike spot to me

The state stopped stocking Pike in Quaddick years ago due to the town drawing it down so much every winter. It was a great Pike fishery years ago. Still great for Bass, Crappie and big slime darts.

i was jogging around a lake in east ct just 15 miles from hartford and it was wide open. no ice at all.
wind was howling which will kill ice development- water moving too much. today will not help either.
i will continue to monitor and ice shanty ct. know when i see safe ice east of the river.
guys have already fished norfolk pond previously mentioned.
