Lots of nice fish from all over.

Here in VT I have caught perch 14"-16" in Lake Carmi, Caspian and Dunmore.  At least these lakes are known for some larger perch.
The closest flag up may be the one that is behind you !

The European "Redfin" Perch can be recognised by its pattern of six or more tapering bands on the sides of the body, a distinct black blotch at the rear of the first dorsal fin, and red pelvic, anal and caudal fins. It has a humped back behind the head, a large mouth, a slightly forked caudal fin, and two dorsal fins (the first with 13-17 strong spines). Transplanted to Australia, from Europe in 1860, where its maximum recorded length is 20 inches and the largest recorded weight is 10.4 lbs. The Redfin Perch is usually found in still and slow flowing freshwaters. It feeds on crustaceans, worms, mollusks, insect larvae and smaller fishes.

Looks like you perch chasers need to book a flight to Australia!  :o

Very nice Taxidermist1, but you need to let others know that those perch are cultured perch. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
I would love to be able to rear my own perch.
All the perch pics that I posted are from Public waters, and from 35'- 45' of water.
There is nothing better than hooking into a slammer perch that deep and having it ripping drag.

Yes and no. I buy mostly feed trained females at a smaller size 8 to 10 inches and plant them into my bass production pond. They don't stay on the pellets and end up going deep and staying deep, feeding on natural feed in the pond.  Wish I could get them to stay on pellets as I could probably grow them faster and even bigger. The bass in the pond won't let them feed on the pellets at feeding time. Bass are more aggressive and tear the water up for the pellets. The perch stay away except for very few exceptions after the bass are done feeding.

I believe these perch get this big by feeding on the offspring of the bass (took out 175 bass to over 4 lbs. this fall from this 3/4 acre pond as there is virtually no recruitment of bass. Where do they go? Perch and bass bellies.  ;D

And if you think fishing for these perch in this pond is like fishing in a barrel think again. Water is gin clear (you can see all the way to the bottom at about 12 feet), and you can't buy a bite on sunny clear days on the ice. Tried it two weeks ago with a friend and he won't be back. Says I don't have any left.  ;D

Icefishing I can only catch them on bare hooks baited with fatheads at dawn and dusk, and about an hour after dark illuminating the water with a lantern. During the day you can pretty much forget it unless it's overcast. It took me two weeks of moving around to find the big ones the year I got the biggest one. The two guys that were fishing with me never caught one perch.

But yes I do respect the fact that you are geting your perch out of public waters and you have more territory to search for fish.

Taxidermist!,
I did not post what I did to take away from your SLAMMER PERCH. Any species of fish that are at their largest size are very weary.
A private lake that I take my 2 daughters to has too many perch and gills, stunted but fun for the girls. I have caught a few Slammer perch there and they will be filled with dime sized gills. I would love to try and thin the population out and see if I could get some truly Giant gills and Slammer perch, but the owner of the lake doesn't like for us to keep anything. I have tried to explain to him that the fish are severely stunted, and need to be thinned out.

I oughta take you to a pond in Cape Elizabeth Me. Where their wild and huge! Haven't got a clue what their eating to make them so big. I'm talking 15" average. Me and a friend iced about 30 or so on tip-ups. Imagine jigging! Not a lot of pressure there. But have good access to it . Start a perch guide service maybe?  FH

Just don't tell your DNR. It's my understanding they are considered an unnative invasive species in Maine. That said I recently mounted a couple that were caught in Moosehead Lake.  I know someone in Maine that had to have their pond rotenoned because they were accused of introducing bluegills.

DNR Or here it's IFW (Inland Fisheries and Wildlife) Don't even look after this pond as far as I know. Don't really think their non-native, just very thick in a lot of ponds to the point where some times that's all you catch. No complaints when we are targeting them. Chew up a lot of bait!  Rich
