Rainbows, shallow or deep?
« on: Jan 29, 2013, 07:52 PM »
Taking my dad out to Bow lake this upcoming Saturday, he has never caught a rainbow through the ice. I am typically a bass fisherman, I have had success fishing shallow for brookies in the past, but was wondering what a good depth for Rainbows would be, any info would be a big help! Really want to put the old man on some bows! Tight lines-

Find a sandy or pea gravel bottom, in 2 to 6 ft of water depending on the clairity, near deep water
drill a row of hole about 6 ft apart, drop 2 or 3 salmon eggs down each hole
go fish deep for what ever, check these holes often, when eggs start disappearing it's time to set the traps
light line, a #8 or smaller hook, a couple of eggs, and set it on the bottom
Hope this helps good luck

Also, look for aerated docks as rainbows love to eat them ;) some are better than others :) open up a shallow rainbow and see what it is that's in their bellies......hmmmmm

Thanks for the help guys, I actually did a little jigging/scouting this afternoon, found beach like sand spots about 5-8 feet deep I think I'll start there!

Good to hear! Just sent you a PM with another spot to try, btw. Good luck out there and let us know how you do!  ;)
