Best all around handheld GPS unit?
« on: Jan 02, 2013, 08:28 PM »
What are you guys using for handheld GPS units? I have a copy of lake maps but since the coordinates are already on there I figured a GPS unit would be the most efficient way.

I don't have one myself, but my brother-in-law has a Garmin.  He uses it to mark his "hot spots", which cuts down on time spent searching for the darn things year after year!!  I Don't know the model number, but he's had it a few years, so it's most likely been upgraded to a different model by now anyway.  sorry, not much help there, but he's had a couple others, and likes the Garmin the best.

I have a Garmin Dakota 20. And really like it. You can get lake maps for it too. Touch screen and easy to use.

I got an ETrex Venture HC last year, my first GPS. Also got the lakemaster lake maps for it, which are nice.
I would not recommend this one though. Just doesn't seem to be very accurate to me, better then nothing but is not pinpoint.

I use the DeLorme Earthmate PN-40. It's waterproof, has the accuracy to use for Geocaching and under the battery cover and batteries is a slot to use a Navionics Chip. I like this feature due to the fact that I can transfer way points from my Hummingbird to my hand held for ice fishing.

Thanks for the responses. Ended up getting a Garmin Oregon 550. Seems like it works pretty good. Spent a few hours today marking out some of my favorite spots.
