10" auger bit with drill

my jiffy power head blew up so i made an adapter for a drill for the 10" auger bit. I've  used it here in southern Massachusetts on 3" of ice with no problem with my 18V Makita. I got 12 holes and the battery was half used. Has anyone used a similar setup but with 10"+ of ice? Is it too much ice for a drill? Too big of an auger bit?

Probably a bit undersized, but it will probably hold up as long as you aren't punching a lot of holes in thick ice. I've seen some guys around here running little 12-16v drills on 6-8" augers, but our ice is rarely over 8 inches thick here. You get into real thick ice or popping a lot of holes, and the drill probably won't like it for very long.

I run a 10” ion on a Rigid octane with a 9ah battery.
Can do 10-12 holes of 15” of ice on a battery.
Had a Milwaukee but chuck wouldn’t hold up.
Go all day on a nills 6” auger.
Would love a nills 10” but too much money for me.

IMHO the life of your drill will be shortened considerably .

Not True at all.. As long as you let the drill do the work is shouldn't harm it much.. If you're really concerned then get a clam plate.. That has a mini gear box that spins the auger faster than the drill spins.. But as long as you don't lay on the drill as your drilling holes you should be fine

Might be too much for hand drill.  But definitely risk wrist injury. Do you really need the 10" drill?

I am assuming it turns counter clockwise(Jiffy) dont know if the torque rating would be equal in reverse as it would in forward .

I was thinking he must have to spin it in reverse for a Jiffy bit... Sounds like a good way to snap the head off the center screw that holds the chuck on and then spin the chuck off the drill.

Good call. Reverse is a bad choice with high torque.

OR take the plunge and pickup an electric auger.  Some good deals out there with many offering 2 batteries and free shipping. They are nice
