1 species of fish that has evaded you!?!?
« on: Jan 21, 2017, 07:24 AM »
Just wondering what the 1 species you've always wanted to catch through the ice but have never been able to make it happen. For me it's a wall eye but I'm sure everyone has their own "white whale". What is yours??

If you ever make a trip down to Boston in the summer I used to catch a ton of them, and big ole 30inch bluefish off the back of a boat I used to work on in the harbor. Was pretty fun at night time too.

Sturgeon.  Obvious catch & release.  A grandpa landed one not far from us on Lake of the Woods about 6 years ago fishing for walleye and sauger.  50"+ if my memory is right.  Very few of them in Champ, but read an article in the recent past, which mentioned the numbers are slightly increasing......

Walleye, big gills in numbers and big crappie in numbers. I can catch one or 2 but it's the numbers or consistently catching them is what is hard for me. Also catching fish on artificial

I'm with u on that 1. Tried a few different times over in ny for tigers both hard and open water and have yet to get 1. I wish they would stick some around vt in some of the lakes and ponds. That would make things interesting

Go fish the CT River below moore dam in spring. That won't be the case for long.  ;D

I have been pretty fortunate with my fishing, I have caught every species on the Vermont Master Angler Program list, although I still need to get a whitefish and a pike/pickerel hybrid large enough to qualify.

The three I would love to get at some point are a lake sturgeon, mooneye and a quillback. Unfortunately, all of these are threatened or endangered... so, at least at this point I probably won't intentionally target them.

There are a few species that I would love to get through the ice at some point though... bowfin is close to the top of that list! I love the idea of pulling a big mama bowfin through a hole!

What the heck is a mooneye anyways? Been a topic of conversation on here lately, but never heard of them personally.

Pulled a 25"+ bowfin through this year on south bay. Fought pretty well on a tipup

A minnow that can get to decent size when they have space to do so. They are fun on light tackle.
