Fished Bomo today and did not catch a smelt! Couldn't mark any on flasher , did manage 1 nice 3 lb smalley. Best time for smelt is probably night time with light! Bigwiggle has caught them all! ha

No they will die off just like Willoughby and Seymour,1000's floating on the surface DEAD .Catch them while you can because mother nature will kill them off if you don't eat em and keep the population down!

I'm more concerned that this is your first time out this year than that you haven't read about smelt in Bomo.

I use a glow hali and a small BB size bibbet a bout a foot up. For bait I filet a minnow (or smelt if you have one) and make aprox. 1/4in. slices. No Vexilar for me yet so I start 2 cranks from the bottom and work my way up keeping track of my depth by reel cranks(either to the top or from the bottom) this way I can be more precise about getting back on the school. I have found refreshing my bait often increases number of hookups 100% sometimes they just peck at it, put some fresh bait on and then immediately start hookin up. Its addictive beware! good thing my girlfriend has been working nights. This is my first year at it and Ive been about 20 nights. Hour before dark and 2hrs after has been the best bite for me
Come on get on the ice fish!!

Remember this? One of these and a size 8 hook baited with a small slab of smelt. I'll bet it still works!
Ice fishing is a social activity that may occasionally be interrupted by the catching of fish.

When the bite is good it doesn't matter that much. Sat. I had a 3 inch long repla on and they kept hammering it. I was hoping to jig up something that is targeting smelt.

I have had most of my fish on a Swedish pimple.

sunday nite I had about 40 smelt in an hour and a half when something big hit,a few minutes later iced a 5# northern.fished another 1/2 and hour and never saw a fish on the sonar. that pike scared the smelt from my area, maybe I shoulda kept him instead of putting him back down the hole.I should have moved but I thought the smelt would return but they didn't.Bomo in 50' of water.

You must of pissed them off Ice Hook..  ;D :roflmao:

If you or tracker one is looking for a good tip to try and get the smelt back in the area you were fishing, then i suggest using a little chum like Crushed up White Egg Shells, only use a Pinch, this will look like little micro organism and plankton to the smelt and it MIGHT bring the Smelt back into the Area.

Something else that works is if you can gather some of the scales that fall off when you make your cut bait. They give just enough flash ;)
