Is a 6 in hole good enought for tip-ups, for bass walleye?

I have an 8" power auger that works out nice, but the smaller diameter the hole, the faster it will freeze up. If I had to do it all over I would have bought the 10" auger. Just my .02 :'(

Most fish will fit through a 6" hole.

If you are going power, get an 8". If you are doing it by hand a 6" is fine.

I've caught pike & tigers through an 8" hole. I always carry a spud bar in case and also use hole covers so they don't freeze up.

Personally I wouldn't want to try and get a big pike up though anything but a 10" hole. I know they'll fit in a smaller one but it's hard enough to get their head turned up into a 10", especially when the ice is really thick and there is less of an angle to work with.

we havea  6inch mora that works fine for most of our applications. i can fit a decent pike through the hole. f the ice getts thick and get tired of hand drilling holes, we have an 8 inch power that we inherited. it cuts about 5 times as fast yet slower than modern augers. still works for me.  but i really think you only need a 6inch if you are fishing for pike under 30 inches and just panfish or walleyes. but if yo are going for big pike and monster eyes and tigers, get an 8 inch maybe even a 10. if you are just fishing for  panfish maybe even a 4 inch is good. 6 inch is my favorite size but i still like the power auger.

some provinces/dont know about the states have regs on how large your hole can be. i believe 10" is not legal in some areas. dont know what they would do about a hole hand chiseled though. any info out there regarding this??????

I've been ice fishing for 30+ years and have yet to see a fish that won't fit through an 8 inch hole.So if any of you are catching fish that won't fit through an 8 inch hole please send me a pm so I can go fishing with you !!!!!  ;D ;D ;D

I got a Brand New Strike Master 3000 XL power auger for christmas and that cut 10" holes and that is plenty but since you are fishing for bass and walleye i would say a 8" hole is plenty

I have a Strikemaster 10".  I think it is a little bigger than you need.  I think an 8" hole will be big enough but you never know when you could get the fish of a lifetime :) :)

If walleye and bass are your main prey, an 8" is a great option.  I personnally like the8"-10" hole, but I fish for pike. :'(
