Title: Pie iron on a buddy heater?
Post by: 800stealth on Jan 09, 2015, 10:06 PM
Anyone ever try using a pie iron on their buddy heater? I've got a bunch of them for summer camping but I've only put them on the coals of a camp fire. I'm not sure if it will get hot enough quick enough... don't want to be steaming my sandwiches lol. Some of my irons have threaded handles. I might take one and cut the handles short and run a die over them so I can screw them back in... They would be way too long the way they are.

I don't know why they wouldn't work, not a lot different from any other heating surface. You have the cast iron ones? Once they get up to "heat", they should be great. You might have to hold them a lot longer over the heater, though.... :-\

I'm going to bring one to work Monday and shorten it up. All my irons are... iron lol, don't like the aluminum ones at all. I'll let you know how it cooks.

I wonder if you drilled some holes through the bottom, if that would help...then flip it over later to let steam out...just a thought.  ???

I have a couple that have holes in them on both sides for cooking hamburger patties over the fire... might do some experimenting for dinner this evening.

I have an old steel pie plate and it works well on mine. Its oval shape sit perfectly on the top and slightly under the handle.
