Northeastern Lower Peninsula Ice Conditions
« on: Jan 08, 2007, 02:15 PM »
Greetings Gents,

I am planning a fishing expedition with a few buddies for this weekend 1/12-1/15.  We will be in the Atlanta/Hillman area.  Just took a look at the weather forecast and here is the prediction:

T 25/18
W 27/26
Th 37/30
F 31/22
Sa 25/24
Su 27/14

Do any of you in that area think the ice will be good by the weekend?

If the 15 day forecast is close, we should have decent ice by the first part of next week.
I think the weekend end would be pushing it but if it happens I'll be out there. ;D

Semper Fi to all the fellow Jarheads out there.  Thanks for the motivating welcome! ;D

Do you think Fletcher's will be the first body of water to freeze?

We will be fishing near Atlanta but I figured if the inland lakes are not frozen we could hopefully head out on Fletcher's ???

I'll keep that in mind...a little drive from where I'll be but I'm willing to go wherever the ice permits.

Depends on the wind. It will at least be one of the safest to fish given the shallow water and isolated coves that will freeze up quick.

According to the weather man and depending on which way it goies we could have a substantial winter storm here Sunday with a large amount of snow. This is'nt going to be good for making ice with snow insulating it. >:(

Weather update doesn't look too favorable:

Currently 39
F 35/17
Sa 21/19
Su 25/16
M 16/8

Figures it would get single digits the day I leave.  At least I'll have some time to get some squirrels :P

I thought I would post the news story since the link probably won't be good tomorrow.

IT'S FEARED A CHILD IS DEAD AS THE RESULT OF A DROWNING IN IOSCO COUNTIES OSCODA TOWNSHIP. OSCODA TOWNSHIP POLICE SAY JUST AFTER 5 PM WEDNESDAY, THEY WERE NOTIFIED 3 CHILDREN HAD FALLEN THRU THE ICE ON NORTH VAN ETTAN LAKE. Definitely a sad thing to hear.  I am sure several of us have ventured out on ice too thin at some point in our lives.  I remember when I was 8 going on my grandma's lake when it was iced over and being able to break through with one hit of the spud.  Stupid.  However, it's not something alot of kids think about when they can slide across ice and play around.  I feel sorry for the child who fell through and his family deserves our prayers.  D@MN WEATHER!!!

Sad to hear about the kid drowning for sure. :(

BTW, has anyone checked for safe ice on the smaller lakes and ponds anywhere in the northern lower. I keep seeing reports on bigger lakes, but haven't noticed much squawking about the little water. Was thinking of taking a drive up if it's not "waterbed ice".
