Drill Chuck Stuck
« on: Dec 21, 2023, 11:34 AM »
Anyone have any suggestion on how to get a keyless drill chuck unstuck.  Seems if I could get a screwdriver or allen key inside of the chuck there is a way to do it but I'm not sure the opening is large enough.  I had a pretty small drill bit in there prior.  It is old Ridgid Octane which is great for chewing through ice especially with the 9ah battery they used to offer.  Wanted to try the new ion light flite with my new adapter last night but ran into this situation.  Will be loading it up with WD40 later today and giving it another go but any tips are appreciated.

The internal screw is usually a counter clockwise screw

I had the same problem on my old Milwaukee drill. It would sometimes appear to be stuck, but I was always able to break it free with a pair of vice grips. Annoying, but it worked for me anyway.

Think that is going to be my last resort.

Appreciate the youtube video too.  The one I found wasn't as good.

I got to ask is that covered under the LSA from Ridgid ?...I know the Octane line is kaput but I think they were giving you the next in line up as a replacement .

Awesome, and once you have it loose and able to power open and closed, give it a shot of WD-40 and do it a few mor times!!  ;)2

My rigid locked up like that I didn't want to break it by really wrenching on it, but theoretically it was already broke so I really wrenched down with the channel locks and it popped open then you spray the wd 40 on it and you are back in business if not you have an excuse to get a new drill.

This is one reason I use a solid auger adapter from HHOgenerators on EBAY. My chuck stays in the house. I got such a deal on an Octane a few years ago, that my Pistol Bit is permanently attached to the drill. If you get yours off, I can send it to you.

The only time my chuck got stuck I had to use a pipe wrench on it. That worked. The counter-clockwise screw had come loose.

I had a stuck chuck on my 18V Milwaukee hammer/drill.  I was able to replace it, and a week later the gears in the drill stripped while putting sheet rock screws in.   I ended up buying a new one after that.  Good luck.

So far no luck. Can’t get it to budge. Might see what Home Depot can do.

Saga continues.  Home Depot told me to kick rocks as they no longer have the direct relationship with Ridgid.  I had registered the drill so will give Ridgid a call to see what they say.  Its looking like I'll be buying a new drill.

Did you ever try opening it with channel locks?

This may help...make sure they fix it or give you the highest torqued drill ..which seems somewhat hard to find

Appreciate it.  I just submitted my claim with Ridgid and need to mail my drill back.  It is supposed to take 14 days to get it fixed or replaced.  I know the model that is equivalent and already bought a spare since it is on sale right now.  The 9ah battery is huge on the ice.  if I didn't have that I would have went Milwaukee.

Will be loading it up with WD40 later today and giving it another go but any tips are appreciated.

Bench vise, towel (to protect the drill), WD-40, channel locks.....either it will open up or it will break.

Good luck!

Ridgid honored the lifetime service warranty.  I got an email the other day saying I should get the shipping tracking number shortly.  I'll report back if it is the appropriate replacement.
