« on: Mar 13, 2021, 11:12 PM »
Interested in going Ice Fishing in New York, I have never gone before. Is there anywhere still open at this point in the year where I can go Ice Fishing in the New York/ Tri State area?

Thanks so much for the help

The answer is Yes but you better hurry. Most of the places in the Catskills still have safe ice and you can check the Southern NY threads to get some ideas. Further north in the Adirondacks there is still ice on lots of the lakes but the big waters could be sketchy in spots. I fished on White Lake in Sullivan county last Monday and there was 12-14" but it will go fast with temps touching 40-50 degrees on some days but nights still dropping into the teens and 20s. Just be sure to check with locals when you pick a lake because sometimes in late season the ice is fine but the shorelines are the first to go and are a challenge. I guess I have to wonder why you waited until the very end?

Speaking of being in a hurry. New York ice fishing season ends on March 15th!

Can you expound on that Frig? I could be mistaken but I sure have ice fished right into early April if the ice remained safe. Certain species seasons close on the 15th but pretty sure if there is ice you can still ice fish for species that are still open.

Only for certain species like pike, walleye, and pickerel.   Still lakes in the Adirondacks that have ice. but with the weather warming, the ice is starting to melt away from the shore in places.

ADK ice will be safe for a few more weeks id imagine however shorelines are already starting to go. getting to the point of the season where finding a safe place to get on is the biggest hurdle to getting out.
