Off season battery maintenance?
« on: Mar 11, 2021, 03:35 PM »
I bought my first flasher, Vexilar FL18, and I'm wondering what to do about maintaining the battery during the offseason. Any advice out there?

If its lithium, just leave it be. I dont too mine off. I just put it up for the season.

SLA I would use a tender on it

Have the exact same unit.  Battery life is superb on mine.  I charge it after each use then once a month during off season. Hope you enjoy your unit as much as I love mine.
Good luck with it!

I read that Lithium should be stored 75% full. In all cases, disconnect everything to prevent a small current leakage from draining it to zero. That is hard on all chemistries.

How does one know and get a battery to 75% full?  Digital voltmeter at what voltage?

My Ridgid tool batteries flash 1-4 lights as they charge up. When it is flashing on 3, I take it off and store it. If your charger has no feedback, you would have to figure out the peak voltage.
Looking at the curves for 18650 lithium cells, which are used to make most battery packs, 75% charge is about 90% of the max voltage. The max voltage was what caused the wear on the cells. That said, these batteries are rated for thousands of cycles, so you probably won't have a problem unless you use it a lot, and are younger than me.  ;)

Im having a problem with my amped 12ah losing voltage after a week.goes from charged to dead and its disconnected from any draw.anyways i contacted amp outdoor and the message i got was keep it at 100% charge for storage.ive been monitoring the battery to see if it goes dead again and i will get ahold of them and see how good the warranty is.its only a year old now.

Sounds like you have a bad cell. I got a new Rigid tool battery, and it died in the first few months- maybe 10 cycles. They replaced it under LSA. All mine that made it a year are still going strong.

Hey Dr, I have the same battery (12ah). I don’t have any problem keeping a charge over a period of time, probably a bad cell. Something definitely wrong if it loses charge in a  week.
