Went by Both Lakes today - Saturday, December 1st 2018

AND WE HAVE SOME ICE FISHING ACTIVITY!!

Pilgrims Village strongly does not recommend fishing yet.

Ice is anywhere from open water to about 2"

Hearing of 2-5” of ice today and by the looks of the weather should be making ice the next couple of days. Can anyone report/confirm?

Thanks

Pilgrims posted update today.
There going to post again Friday.
I think after next 4 days the ice will be more consistent.

Ice Report: Wednesday 12/5/2018
Lake Mitchell & Lake Cadillac

The lakes look a lot different after just a couple days. They are both almost entirely covered now, but with the fresh dusting of snow all of the ice looks the same now weather it has 1/2" of ice or 5". It seems like all the places that had ice on Monday all gained about 3/4" of ice. Keep in mind much of both lakes had serveral spots of open water and those places will have probably less than an inch of ice. Off of Thirsty's and by Camp Torenta both had thicknesses from 1-3 1/2" so pretty inconsistent. Kenwood Park on Lake Cadillac was about 3". The most ice is right behind our shop where it has never thawed since in first froze. Almost 6" there but I don't know how far out that lasts. Be patient, we're gaining ice everyday. Next check will probably be Friday.

Since the southwest corner of the state looks to be awhile, I'll be looking to head north after Christmas just to wet a line.   Thinking about Cadillac and Mitchell. Only fished there once and it's been a long time.  Are there other places to park or is it limited to the public access sites?  Looking at a Google map there appears to be some smaller parking areas near parks and historical markers.  Can the ice be access from those places as well?

I don't know much about the lake and am not looking for fishing spots, just looking to make a plan of attack and what options there are for parking.  Looks like you could park at the Junior High school and walk across the street.  With the school being closed for the holidays may that's possible?  Perhaps frowned upon?

Thanks for any help!

There are a number of good access spots with parking on both, Cadillac and Mitchell.  As Doeslayer mentioned, stop into Pilgrim's and they'll give you a map to help you out.

Thanks for the responses.  I will definity stop in to Pilgrims!  Just don't know much about fishing in that area up there so seems like a good place to start!  Thanks again.

Kenwood Park is always a good place to start on Lake Cadillac. Big Cove, Thirsty's, and right behind Pilgrim's if you want to try Mitchell.

There's a launch you can walk out from if you want to try Little Cove on Mitchell, or park at Camp Torenta and walk out into Big Cove on Mitchell. Both spots are popular.

Went to Houghton first...it was a bust. Guys were catching a few pike on tip ups but pannies were a no-go...dink perch...fished all day and we covered a LOT of territory. Mitchell had 6"+ in most areas.

Good question. There was about 6"  a week ago in most areas. I would give Pilgrims Village a call before heading up. It's all going to depend on the temperature,  amount of rain and wind they get up there.

I would suggest you bring some good ice creeper. The amount of rain they are calling for is real light and with the sudden drop in temps tomorrow afternoon it will be slick, that is if the weatherman is right. I live about 20 miles east and it is snowing here now

I believe the ice will hold, but will likely be a wet and slick mess with pooled water on the surface until we get back to more favorable temps on Saturday/Sunday.  ALWAYS spud your way out and if we get a skiff of snow early Saturday watch out for old holes that will open wider due to this warm up.
