Mora style auger cover, made from PVC, and some shock cord...

I am now in the need of a new blade protector. What size PVC did you use for this blade protector? assuming one end cap is glued and the other is loose. is the loose end larger than the outside diam of the PVC? How wide did you cut the slot?

I made one of these covers using 1 1/2" PVC for my 5" mora hand auger. I don't know if this design works on a lazer auger. Yes, glued the one cap on, and the other is also a cap that just fits around the outside of the PVC tube. Make sure you leave some extra length on the pipe section so you can get the removable cap on. I cut my slit at about 3/4" wide and test fit and adjusted from there. I wanted a pretty tight fit, it ended up at roughly an inch wide. A Dremel makes pretty quick work of it, just do it outside because the dust from that PVC is super fine and gets everywhere. I used a shock cord on my cap, just drilled holes and tied a knot, and also added holes to the tube part of it so any water could drip out.

Yep, just the standard PVC end caps.

Did you sand a little off the inside of the removable cap to make a looser fit? or does the pipe with the slot cut out flex enough that it isn't an issue taking the cap off when cold?

It was a tight fit until I cut the slot. I didn't sand anything on the inside of the cap, but I did file off the sharp edges from that end on the pipe and chamfered the outside edge so it would go on easier.

Could you just cut the slotted piece longer and skip the caps?

no, because the caps keep it on the blade

Fair, thanks for clarifying. Need to replace my mora cover, the rubber rope snapped.

Gorilla gluing magnets to the bottom of the cover only lasted 3 or 4 trips

This looks more reliable.

If your old cap is still good and the "rubber rope" is the only thing wrong I've used the shock/bungee stuff to replace the solid rubber. Lasts for years (and years).

This works well as a replacement for my 6 in SM Lazer cover

Thanks esox and diehard.

I actually have a few dozen of those bungee ball cords in my camping gear, bought them to hang a huge tarp over the tents last year as a rain guard. Never even opened the package. Will give it a shot today, augers, shanty and spud bar are the last of the gear I need to store

My idea more like this ...may have to drill a hole in one end and tie a knot

Gotcha. Tie a know and hook the ball where the rubber cord would be.

Will look into that

Some IS members were adding a SM center point to the Moras ..by drilling and tapping the auger .

Don't have video but have pics. Center punch where you want point. Drill 1/4 pilot hole followed with 5/16 drill tap size. Tap hole with 3/8 hand tap. (Tap/drill set for $8 at Lows or Home Depot). I use washers for spacer to get proper tip height. I use Titanium or Cobalt hardened drill bits.
Welded nut also great idea. What size nut did you use.

Love your mods Mr Scratcher. I enjoy poking about at that sort of thing as well. I liked your Mora cover that I more or less copied it.Iused ABS and 3 screw eyes for the elastic cord.

I originally put this board at the back of my Pelican to carry my rods when moving some dist between holes. Then I found other uses for it. I find the auger is awkward to transport and takes up a lot of space in the Pelican,

Hey ice scratcher, how did you modify the tubing after you cut it out? Did you weld the bottom section, closest to the auger? And what size aluminum tubing did you use? I’m thinking I want to do that mod for an 8” mora versus buying an 8” pistol bit. Haven’t decided what’s more cost effective yet.
