Hi everyone
Had the blessing of becoming a new father in May--a boy-- and was wondering when everyone brought the kid (s) on the ice for the 1st time.  I remember going at about 4 or so w/my dad.  Your thoughts?

The employment of effort, hard work, time, and energy put in locating fish will offend noone.

As a new dad, thats one of the fisrt things I asked my DR...

He doesn't recomend any eariler than 1 year :( :( He said the young ones easilty get frost bite, and can get hypothermia in a blink of an eye. Again thats a DR's recomendation.

i may bring my daughter out in march when/if the weather permits(she'll be 9-12 months during the season).... warm day, no wind, hard shack with a wood stove, and easy access to the shack.

Not worth the risk for me.... I'd hate to see her with frost bite.

First off congratulations on the wee one Vermonner (and thanks for the help with the shack, pics to come soon).

I took my eldest daughter out when she was 4. She loves being on the ice. I am going to try and take the 2.5 yr old out this year, if only for an hour and if only I can get that past the wife.

I'm with mealworm on this. My two boys were each on the ice as soon as they were potty trained. This also applies to me. The day I can no longer control my own bladder is the day I hang up the traps. I'm 32, so I have a ways to go.

Take them as soon as you feel it's time. You need to pick your days and plan on staying short amounts as they get antsy quick. Start them out jigging with a flasher and they will stay interested longer but still not real long. Just watch out for those guys and their 10" holes ???

(Image removed from quote.)

Few years ago, I went fishing with a doc I work with, he popped a 10" hole with his brandy new Jiffy, shut it down and said  "I better get an 8" bit, my daughter could fall through that"

Had my son on the ice at around 3 yrs old . I would take him on short trips .One thing to remember is to never take your eyes off your kids /kid . Just because its hard water doesnt mean they cant get wet . keep your auger blades covered at all times !!!!!!!

Most importantly for a good outing is to keep them warm ,plenty of snacks/drinks and on fish .

Now those are some cool pics hazmt. I learned first hand about big holes. But I was the idiot that cut it. Last winter my oldest (7) went in one of my 8" holes up to his hip. We both learned a lesson that day. He looks down on the ice and I use the old 6" when I bring my lil ones. It was also the first time I actually needed the extra change of clothes that I bring for them. Glad I had them for sure.

My oldest daughter is 13 now, but she caught her first fish when she was 1 month away from her
2nd birthday. It was just a skinny little 16" pike, but what a moment.
I've got pics of her actually hugging the fish before we let it go.

She would go out with me all the time after that, as long as it wasn't too bitter cold out.

Well, I didn't start ice fishing until my kids were grown and too cool to hang out with dad. BUT, I took my granddaughter out when she was 3. She caught her fish that day and now loves to go. She would rather play with the fish once it is caught, but she is a real prize on the ice.
Her first fish.

She named it "Buddy." I caught her giving it a kiss here.

Yeah, I thought he was going to slide right off the seat when those feet kicked out!

I'd be up to get together this winter Tom. I've got family in Waverly and went to school in Waterloo for a few years so I know a few spots to hit!  ;)
