Heading up to stay at Elk Ridge for a few days after Christmas and was wondering about fishing Bittern while I'm there. Does anyone know if you can still get around the lake with a 4x4 or do you need a snowmobile? Bittern would be my first choice as it's smaller and a bit closer but if Bittern is no good maybe Montreal is worth a shot. We haven't fished either of these lakes so any advice is appreciated!

There's hardly any snow on either lake. 4x4 not even needed yet. Fish are biting good at Montreal. Caught over 20 the other day. Not sure about bittern. But usually pretty good at this time of year.

Yeah, travel is easy on Montreal and the fishing has been good.

I am also up at Elk ridge until saturday...never fished either. Where is the best access points on Montreal or Bittern?

we got on Tuesday at Timber Bay and sledded around 12 miles up the east side of lake. Didn't find any slush, couple of heaves to cross, plenty of snow.

Bittern Lake is the place to take a kid for a positive fishing experience. Just finished fishing 2 days on Bittern, March 21 & 22. Non-stop ripping lips on the hammer-handles. Wally's were biting good too! Yes, there is lots of snow, 2 feet and the beginnings of slush. BUT here is the great news there is a road graded onto the lake which goes for about 2 km. The ice road is two trucks wide with a big turn-around at the end. See the attached pictures of the road. Get outside and self-ICE-olate!

I just called the Montreal Lake Band Office and was told after today, the road though the community will be closed to all fishermen to access Montreal Lake and Bittern. If anyone finds this not to be true please post.

I don’t know why they would worry about the fishermen as I and a lot of others already avoid any contact on the reserve as much as possible. Just looking for somewhere to fish and enjoy the outdoors
