Garaged Ice Fishing Lures
« on: Jul 22, 2010, 02:39 AM »
Here are the garaged ice fishing lures that had brought me a lot of success last year.  I talked about the fairy wings addition to the buckshots or spoons here and there.  Now I've got photos to show them.

This is more like a slow type of lure.  Only a slight down tap to make the fairy wings flutter on it.

Can be fished somewhat aggressive, but finesse it really the key to these modifications.  I've snipped the front hook, just my preference, and added a treble to the rear.  I crimped the regular hook around the the treble and the treble is held up by a glow rubber bead.  Color matching hackle feathers is just a nice touch with a bit of mylar.

Straight forward removal of split rings and tie direct with Fireline.  Hook set is big huge improvement.

Just fun to make a doodlebug dance with fairy wings.

Fairy wings added to these spoons and fished with a finesse style of tip tap down.  The flap of the fairy wings really calls the fish in.  Metal on metal vibrations can work at some of the tough bite periods.

These modifications to the buckshots has made them really noisy lures.  I was able to call in catfish from the deep to hammer these lures.

ThoH!  Should've put this in the Jigging subforums...Mod please move thanks.

Thanks HIMO,

and all who looks at this.

I'll keep tinkering with normal lures as since sometimes the hot lures becomes the normal lures everybody uses and a little change keeps it hot.

A few more simple design with various blades.

Formerly plain Thingamajigs, but now with swapped out components.  While I like how the plain Thingamajigs worked, they simply didn't have enough fish calling power.  The blades added the missing action needed to get the job done.

A Hexi Fly with fairy wings.  A Forage Minnow Spoon with fairy wings.  An Eye Dropper Spoon with kicker tails.  There's just something about having those flickering blades that makes a fish hit it with more aggression vs it's plain original design.

Spinner blades are cheap as dirt, there is no reason I can think of not to try this. Jann's Netcraft has the itty bitty sizes. Becareful with netcraft though, that site can spawn a hobby more addictive than Marlboros!

Love em. Actually bought one at a bait shop with the blades on it (paid way too much for it) but I definitely caught fish, even when the spikes were taken from it.

Only problem with ordering blades is that the wife is home all day and she gets the mail. lol

I think, I'm done making some pre modification to the Northland Live Forage Ice Lures.

Fish Fry Minnow Trap: w splitrings and red treble hook, splitring-swivel-splitring chaing to tailspin blade and red hook, big bulging epoxy eyes.

Fish Fry Minnow Spoon and Moxie Minnows: big bulging epoxy eyes, swivel on splitrings

Gosh, they look really convincing to me now...will I convince a fish to bite it?  We'll see.... ;D

I was gonna order some eyes from Jannsnetcraft but went out on a ledge and decided to order some from tacklewarhouse instead.  Since they're epoxy eyes, they don't conform to anything else but a flat surface.  There may be some spacing on an uneven surface so I've applied a little fly head cement.  That's what I have, should hold it for the season.  If not, I will go super glue or expoxy to hold it.

Nothing but slush everywhere, sooo...back to lure doctoring

Trying out a different modification.  I've added some flutter wings to the dorsal of the glow perch trap lure.  Only tank tested and the hooks don't hang so there's a potential for it.

Just adding epoxy eyes to the Phoebe spoon and Sidewinder spoon.  The silver chartruese Sidewinder spoon has a red treble hook one size down (#14) hook for fishing for smelt.

I do this with big water lures all summer long on lake Erie. Never even occurred to me to do this with my ice lures! Looks like I'm going to the store today to get ready for the day after Xmas family ice tournament ;).

If you're referring to this lure:

It's just camera angle.  The treble is not attached to back at all.  It's attached to the bottom.  Lure is just propped and leaning on treble.

I guess a recap of last season's tests is in order.

The most disappointing lure was the Live Forage Traps.  I couldn't not dial in on the proper action of the lure.  Too slow and you get nothing.  Fast snaps/lifts and they merely only scare away the fish as well as tangle up your line.  The modified lure with the tail spin blade did a much better job of attracting fish and actually getting them to bite the lure.  The hook up was lousy as since the bites were rather light.  I'm guessing it's all about the little tail spinner.

The Moxie Minnows were the best producers of the Live Forage lures.  They caught fish when I least expected them to.

I didn't have much success with any of the live forage lures except for the moxie minnow either. One thing I didn't like is the fact that they didn't list the weight on any of the packaging, so I have a couple of live forage minnows that are a lil too heavy for my walleye rods now. And while I haven't fished any of these on a "hot" bite too truly find out how well they work...I too am a little dissapointed as most of the time I'd use em the fish would come in and have a look, then leave. And that minnow trap didn't call in diddly squat for me at all. They might work on extremely aggressive fish, but I'm not gonna take of something that is already producing fish for me just to try em out.
