Caught amongst perch on a southern tier lake in the Dansville area.
My guess is a green sunfish hybrid....possibly with a...rockbass?

A gill-rock, blue-rock, grock, block bass? Whatever it is, I want one! The real question is what does it taste like?
-

Jaw structure/eye placement is different.
-
i'm not a biologist i'm just a bored old guy that cuts a hole in the ice and catches fish till flyfishing begins.......ya can't id anything with a picture
-
That thing looks like a lot of different fish, its striped like a perch, has the chest of a sunfish shoulders of a rockbass and mouth of a a smallie..
Ive got this figured out as to exactly what happened, every 4 years what happens in the bays of some waters is known as the the "Drunken Weed Bed Dance" All the fish all get together and drag all the beer cans and bottles vagrants and lazy fisherman left behind and party like there is no tomorrow.. We have all been in this situation before, after a few beers with us humans a 4 looks like an 8 and a 6 looks like a 10.. With fish its no different, a perch sees a rock bass after a couple sips and says ahhh what the heck those are some nice curves and beady red eyes i wonder if she wants to go out back by the lily pad... ::)
-
It looks like a chiclid haha....possibly a mayan cichlid/roxk bass
-
;D ;D ;D Haven't laughed that hard in weeks!!!!!!!

Look up green sunfish. All the images look identical to it. Warmouth doesn't have stripes look at the images on Google

...Banded Sunfish.
-
Where did ya catch it? I would say green sunfish
-
War mouth are in ny, I have caught war mouth in many different small ponds around here....it looks like one
-
I agree with the Green Sunfish folks
http://www.pima.gov/cmo/sdcp/species/fsheets/ex/sf.html
-
Fish was caught in a pond/small lake in the southern tier. My buddy won't let me blow up the spot... u know how that is. But I thought is was very cool Fish he caught, so I had ( bigred ) put a pic up of the fish. In the description of a warmouth they have 3 to 5 lines that radiant (if that's the word) from the eye. This fish doesn't. So off the bat no warmouth...... possible hybrid of a green sunfish or just a green sunfish.
-
Looks like a green sunfish/bluegill hybrid to me. Stripes like a big gill and a large head and mouth of a green sunfish. These hybrids are popular with pond owners. Aggressive like a green sunfish and they get as big as gills can get.
-
already said but i would have said warmouth i caught one a long time ago in the lower hudson
-
Only one way to tell for sure.......
DEEP FRY IT AND SEE WHAT IT TASTES LIKE!
Let us know, thx.
-
I think it`s a rock bass

Fair enough. I was just trying to think geographically how would/could it be there
-
i have caught some fish in places they had no place being even one of a kind in some places people release fish in places where they did not catch them often enough
-
if you really wanted to know take the picture and but it in the general ice shanty thread of go on myfishfinder and put in under some of the more southern forums
-
Odd looking 1!
-
Is peacock sunfish..

No doubt related to the hairy chested nut scratcher..... ::)
-
I agree with the Green Sunfish folks

All the searching I did, I agree with mike304 it is most likely a green sunfish. Don't try to make it something it isn't. Let your local DEC fish biologist tell you what it is. Our tax $$$ pay for him to know.
-
No doubt related to the hairy chested nut scratcher..... ::)
my God I don't know how I missed it ....your correct!!!!
-
Peacock bass grabbed a blue gill for a wife.

We are In The north east Cold water, warmouth need warmer water they are down south fish. Aquarium fish. Google New York State green sunfish that is exactly what it is.
actually the native range of green sunfish and warmouths is the same ....both greens and warmouths have been used I pond stockings and have found there way into the great lakes ....I have caught many greens down in Oswego at times .....
warmouths and greens look very very similar and yes warmouths do have the stripes
-

actually the green and warmouths native range is exactly the same! they look very very similar warmouths in fact do have stripes ,both fish have been stocked in ponds in new York state and used as hybrids ...both fish have found their way into the great lakes ....
so you got a picture of a fish with a lot of glare that could be either one (or something totally different) and you have a bunch of guys that use maggots as bait to sit on the ice and fish threw a hole with frozen snot hanging off their faces using google to make them fish ID experts .....how can ya lose figuring this one out geeee whiz andy
-
Trapper you think he knows it all. Look at the pic .. get out your glasses. And guess, what if u can read..... warmouths don't have lines on their FACE. Cuz that's what I said. So know it all.... all u do on Here is run your mouth I think k u are nothing but a warmouth
-
I figured this would be a good conversation piece as well but you gotta have one or two of those douchebags out there

That's a cool looking fish probably a green sunfish id say after looking at pictures. The coolest fish I've seen though i was about 12 years old mind you I started fishing around 3 and could identify pretty much any fish at 12, I was fishing chautaqua lake with my dad out of we wan chu cottages, when we pulled up to the dock I asked an older guy getting out of his boat if he caught anything, he said he had 1 walleye and being a kid I asked to see it. So he showed me and it was a smallmouth so I said something like "that's no walleye" then he proceeded to open its mouth and it had teeth. It had me stumped 100% looked like a smaller but had teeth of a walleye, I'll remember that day forever. If I was older looking back I would have payed that guy to take that fish and took it to the second to see what it was. Imagine if it actually fought like a smallie and tasted like an eye!!!!
