For gill, crappie and perch, I use Trilene 1# micro ice. If you have heavier line on your rod already, just add a couple feet of the lighter line on the end like a tippet.

You've basically got three general choices;  monofilament, flourocarbon, or braided superline.  I'd personally rank them like this:

Line     Stretch    Strength    Visibility     Memory

Mono        3             2              2             2
Floro         2             3              1             1
Super        1             1              3             3

Each has it's advantages and disadvantages.  Super is strong, but visible.  Floro is invisible, but weaker than the others.  Mono is a good all around choice, but not as strong as super or invisible as floro.  I'd recomend starting with Berkley cold weather arctic blue (mono) in 2# test and then experimenting with the others to see what works best in your specific situation.  I don't go down to 1# unless I absolutely have to.

I use Trilene Micro Ice in one pound test on my perch stick and I seem to do as well or better than anyone I have fished with.

I used the new P-Line Floroice last year. I was ultra impressed.  I have all rods spooled up again with it.  I use 2lb on bluegills and Crappie and perch

I like to spool up with fireline then have the leader a 4ft piece of flourocarbon. When the fight is on the fireline handles the bottom of the ice hole very well. When the fish is tired he is then dealing with the fluoro at the end of the line.

I'm with TERRY. I use the Fireline, and use the 2 lb test (about 4 feet) at the end. It really does a good job on Slab Gills.

I use four or six pound line for backing. Something limp. And a leader of vanish. Tried using all vanish for the main line. To many twist and tangles in the cold.
When the ice is on. I'm on the ice.

What kind of lines do you use when fishing walleye?  Also what lines for different techniques?

If you use two different lines tied together with a swivel ( four foot leader) , would a Vexilar pick up the swivel. Just wondering if I should use a swivel or not?

For gills and perch I use 2 lb.test Stren.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an  well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, A fishing pole in one hand, beer in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming \"WOO HOO, what a ride!

Is fireline a monofiliment or a braided line.  How about some of the real small dia braided line. Or is it best to stay with mono?  Thanks in Advance  Capt,n ::)
