For New York per DEC in case anyone was wondering......As of August 17, 2011, the number of allowable lines, with or without a rod, that may be used for angling in freshwater was increased to 3 lines. However, when ice fishing, the number of hand lines that may be used remains unchanged at 2 lines (plus 5 tip-ups).

New York Lake Erie ice fishing usually starts around February, after all the ice from Ohio, Pennsylvania and the western end of the lake is blown down to an area from Sturgeon Point to Point Abino, ON. It will be shoves to the bottom and locked up on all shores except from the west where an east wind can cause getting back problems. Getting out to 55 foot of water where the mud bottom is will get you on the biggest perch around here. That is a couple miles trip out and a lot longer coming back. You are in the "big leagues" of ice fishing here and a lot of prepararion is necessary. A compass may be needed to get back as blowing snow will obscure the shoreline and drift over the trail out. A cell phone with GPS is a good thing to have for communications and GPS locating. Law enforcement will ticket you from helmets, solid towbars, registrations, bait receipts, etc. Wind breakers can protect you from exposure and are lighter and cheaper than huts. It is best to start out with "old timers" to show you the ropes out there.
You can not take too many perch, unless you can not clean them, give them to your friends and neighbors to clean and cook. The more perch you take, the faster and bigger the rest  will grow. The walleyes and bass will survive from fry to fingerlings.

Right on Jim, Usually for us to get out its about making a path through the shoves of ice that can sometimes continue on as far as the eye can see.  Lot of things break down in the shoves. The old timers are crazy so i usually follow them as well. Anyone see a christmas tree out yet? ha

Where's the topic?

As usual it got started in someone else's topic-not sure which one. The bottom line seems to be that although DEC raised the number of hand lines to three (like when you are fishing from shore) but the limit is still two (plus 5 tipups OR tipdowns) for ice fishing. Cya....

Regulation Change: As of August 17, 2011, the number of allowable lines, with or without a rod, that may be used for angling in freshwater was increased to 3 lines. Where ice fishing is permitted, 3 hand lines plus 5 tip-ups may be used.

OK, On that same page they have a link to the one I posted. They must have changed it after and never took down the older regulation highlights section?

http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/33063.html

So now out of the 30 rods I have I can use 3. Better go get some more...

I only got two hands.

What kind of chinese fire-drill are they running where you have a rod in each hand, one jammed between your toes, all while you are watching two or more of your flags popping up :o

Icefishing lake erie is probably the most dangerous icefishing trip available in the northeast...its not to be taken lightly and if you are going to attempt it be prepared for anything bad that could happen...I mean this... and most guys who have the beans to do it will verify from unstable shove ice to uneven ice growth to tides leaving gaps between the water and the ice to current flows wind changes...not trying to scare anyone just saying be prepared ...and hopefully there's still a chance to get out  ;D

Ive never experienced anything quite like fishing erie...was miles from shore after dark on a frigid windy day. The ice made noises ive never heard before. only time ive been scared like that. me and a buddy had fished our way out to machine/atv territory a few miles at least. i really wasnt sure if we were gonna make it back, ice was screaming and popping so loud, ice was cracking under the sled and water was getting forced out of our holes. we pretty much ran the whole way back. I believe they call that the "pucker factor" in ohio!! oh and we only caught a few short eyes and 2 perch

.. we’re still tracking @ about 6 Deg.F. Warmer water temps. than last year this date, similar (maybe) to 2004 ice season …

I don't see that there is anymore or less of a chance of it freezing this year, not much usually happening by now out there anyways and I hope eventually real winter will come. Thos shoves that are spoke of can make a 2.5-3 mile walk out turn into 3.5-4. I am a walker I am not a fan of shoves. Hope to hit the Big lake again this year .

Its difficult enough to go 2-4 miles out in my 16' Starcraft Super Sport and have the Lake turn on me... FAST.  I couldn't imagine walking out that distance.  The waves that blow me off Erie usually come from weather happening in OH or PA... hard to know the weather locally, much less hundreds of miles away.  I'll wait until spring to hit those perch...
