Piseco Lake
« on: Feb 09, 2011, 06:49 PM »
Looking for a change of scenery from my neck of the woods, and thought Piseco might be a good option. Can anyone give me any info on where to go and FOW i wanna be in? Any conditions would be great. And, if there are any local bait shops you could point us to , that would be great. Heading out tomorrow, so If you are out there, look for a big dufus in Blue Carhart overalls and a Syracuse hat on!

You can park at poplar point campground. Walk out about 300 yards.  Fish from 30 FOW to deeper.  Most lakers caught will be less than the keeper size.

Also the only bait shop I know near the lake closes in the winter.  I would use Large shiners and when you get there, try to jig up some smelt to put on your tip-ups too.

had a camp on piseco a few years back and boat fished with downriggers and ice fished with tip ups and jig pole. Caught a very few during that time and never got a keeper laker or never jigged up a smelt. Don't think its a great lake to fish.

feedback hows the fishing been in recent years spyder rybak is a renowned fisherman i read his book on the adirondack region and he had nothing but good things to say about piseco lakers average 18 to 24 inches salmon 15 to 20 and the whitefish 15 to 20 as well if this is accurate im going with some beers and a grill  all in good fun me and my friends have a blast when its not freezing when we read about piseco we looked more into and its legit nice deep lake healthy smelt populations plus theres salmon its the place to visit plus i hear its beautiful.

piseco is a beautiful lake, winter or summer good access from the state campsites lots of lake trout you will have action. although in recent years it's hard to catch a legal one. salmon are also caught regularly sizes may be a little better than the lake trout but you won't catch as many but the potential is there to catch a big fish of either type, there is a good population of white fish I'm not sure if very many people target whitefish but they do catch them fishing for other fish. Back in the 1960'sand 70's we used to jig for them in the summer with pretty good success. but it's been a long time since I did that

Tuff lake on foot. Really need some way of moving around.  Get down around the islands for some good action.  Or go to the other end around the outlet where the sand meet's the rock's.   If you go to the bait shop in speculator he can give some good tips and give you jig's that will work there.  Also take a look at the picture album.  amazing some of the fish they have pulled out.

Piseco wide open,  pleasant, and sacandaga had open water with some skim ice, not much frozen and with the rain and wind, probably won't be for a while.
