Around 200 people fishing on Upper Red Lake
        were rescued Monday
after a large sheet of ice broke free from the main shoreline

This seems to happen every year on Upper Red here. The resorts post that they are open and people flock up here before the lake is totally locked up. A stiff southerly wind whips up and blows the ice sheet around opening the lake back up causing numerous people to be stranded out on the ice

So they started trolling? J/K, from what I have read on other forums, it was all a very controlled situation, nobody panicking, everyone made if off under their own power as the resort put a bridge across the crack. Its just getting blown out of proportion by the media

Not really a rescue.  The crack formed, and people started walking off after the resort put up a bridge.  Those that didn't know about it were alerted by an emergency broadcast or word of mouth.  Nobody got wet, no gear was lost, and some people just wanted to keep fishing.

That said, I think I'll wait a bit before venturing out.

Given the combined amp hrs most likely available to those stranded. A couple 80* thrust Minkotas could have taken them to any shore they desired.🤣
