Need to ride it more, steering was a little tough in fresh snow, but I brought wood up to the house today and it steered awesome, snow was a little melted and packed think might be the ticket on ice

Smokin...You might want to put some Kold Cutter carbide studs in the track. They worked great on my Dog.

Dealer says if u stud track, warranty’s no good. Seems to pull fine,

My dealer recommended that I stud the track. I wonder where that came from?

It should pull fine in any case.

According to Gamalot, "Not true! Snowdog sells ice screws to put in your track but twice the price of ones you can buy on line. Kold Kutter Ice Screws are in mine and just about the same as what Snowdog sells."

Thanks for letting me know that, my dealer in ny, said if I stud track warranty would not cover. I don’t think I need to stud unless I was on glare ice, can’t wait to try it out .

I also found the studs useful for going up steep boat landings or lake access points that had gotten packed down or iced up. I never had any trouble, even with heavy loads on the flats when it was compacted or glare ice. The hills and access points, especially steep ones, seem nicer with studs.

So how much does Cuomo want in order to register it?  Does it need to be registered?

No registration, no insurance for ny yet, but u know NY will want to squeeze every cent out of there residence, so we will see how long that last

;DI have both, the dog will fit my needs on smaller lakes and I don’t need a trailer to haul it around. If I put my wheeler or sled in the back of my truck there is no room for gear. With the dog I got room for all my gear. And not screwing around with a trailer is a win win for me.

bought a dog last season love it its top heavy so its a little tricky in deep snow but the ice is usually packed or blown pretty clean so it really wasn't a problem I studded the track with kold kutters that worked great they didn't hurt the track put a drop of super glue on them and screwed them in.you will want them when you get a couple inches of wet snow on slick ice. bought a cargo carrier for the hitch load it on there have the back of my van for the dog sled and 2 clams no reg. no ins. no helmets right now!!! love it

I bought a snowdog this summer.  they are worth the money.  Less maintenance then a snow mobile, lighter to move around, You dontneed a trailer they fit in a SUV or in a pickup bed. no registration, you can chain sleds together and you can not get the snowdog stuck! For ice fishing it it better then a snowmobile.   plus they are $3500 versus $5,000 for a sled.Down side is don't get caught using them on Snowmobile trails.  Encon made it clear they do not want snow dogs on snow mobile trails period, unless accessing a ice fishing location. Plus you can use it during the summer.

They are allowed on snowmobile trails in Minnesota.

In ny state the lake is considered part of the trail system... if you can’t register it and get insurance you can’t use it on a lake. Another down side is they only go like 15 mph lol

Post by: wildlifer100 on Jan 05, 2019, 07:59 PM
i'm sure you can get insurance.  they do 20mph.   only in ny can you not run them on trails.   other states you can.  you can still use in trails if you are going fishing.

throw lights on it and register it as homemade.   the state doesn't need my money that bad

You don’t need to be an expert, if it doesn’t have a registration or insurance in ny you can’t use it on the lakes because they see it as part of a trail system. Just like the guys with utvs . If an officer wants to be a prick they can ticket.

Your statement is incorrect.  a snowdog does not fall into a motorized vehicle. it is not a UTV or ATV therefore they can be used.  I spoke with Encon  they can be used for ice fishing on lakes until the state changes it regs they do not need to be registered.  They don't want snowdogs on main snowmobile trails because the snow dogs do not have taillights.  lakes are fine and trails to ice fishing locations.I recommend hooking a bike blinking light to be safe.
by the Law a snowdog is not a motorized vehicle.  Thus snowdogs do not need to be registered.

I honestly don’t care. But one officers opinion can differ from other. They can always give you a ticket and let the judge handle it. I’d rather not get myself into that situation or have a trip cut short. It’s the same thing with a utv . One officer might let it slide but not the other.

Anyone have a fuel leak issue? Mine drips hard under the choke lever. Taking it back to the dealer today to have it looked at.

Some here in NY seem to think they know things they don't know. I ran my Snowdog here all last winter and right past ENCON officers doing license checks. Neither of them said a word about registration, insurance or any restrictions on the dog. Being it is NY it is probably safe to say there will eventually be some way they figure out how to get their pound of taxes out of us but as of right now there simply is no regulations on them on the ice. Up in the northern part where they do have designated snowmobile trails might be a bit different but the Snowdog is a perfect trail grooming machine and they do make an attachment for grooming with it. I can see some issues where you have snowmobiles flying by at 90 MPH and the dog is topped out around 20 MPH.
As far as running into a "Pr*$%, Encon officer who will make up his own rules and give you a ticket I very much doubt that unless you are being an idiot or argumentative with him. I have had nothing but very pleasant visits from the rangers and officers but my license is always current and in my possession while fishing and I don't ever break any of the regulations on size or limits. I never have met such a nasty LEO out fishing but have seen a couple do their jobs and issue tickets to guys who deserved them. I absolutely love my Snowdog because it does what I can no longer do and it takes up a small space in my shed 2' X 5' during the off season. It is not a vehicle and it is a tow motor and will pull a massive load. My picture is on the Snowdog web page showing me with my dog and pulling 3 shanties and 2 sleds filled with gear. I would have had another heart attack just pulling my own shanty and gear. If you don't like a Snowdog then I have just one suggestion, Don't buy one. Why some here want to slam those of us who have Snowdogs is beyond my comprehension but some guys like Fords and others like Chevys and some like ATVs, UTVs and snowmobiles and that's OK by me. If I bought a 4 legged Mule to pull my gear out on the ice would it be legal or would someone complain about animal cruelty or go postal when the Mule took a dump?
